Hello again all,
I am back to once again plumb the depths of the collective wisdom
hereabouts,so please help yourselves to a beverage of your choice and
ponder this; My 12 yo CV carb (97 FLSTF)has begun to leak and is
stinking up my garage where the LP gas water heater resides,so I'm
concerned about the cat that lives out there. The leak is on the front
or forward side of the carb, and seems to be coming from the area where
the accellerator pump is. This is a small plastic handle that rotates
via a conection to the little half round wheel the cables are
connected to. When I actuate the throttle, the connecting rod ,with a
small spring that surrounds the rod, rotates the plastic arm and a bit
of gas seems to weep out from around the base of the plastic arm where
it rotates in the carb body.I wonder if there is a gasket or seal that
can be replaced or is it worth it to do so? Is this a usual
occurrance? I hate to replace the carb entirely as it has been working
well since I put in the thunderslide a few years back. Whatta ya's
think? Thanks for any advice, and please have another.

Go for it. If you put the thunderslide in yourself, it'll be a piece of cake
taking it apart and replacing the rubber parts. Prolly just a pinhole
or small tear in the gasket. It's been a while since I've been in mine,
so I don't remember exactly what's in there, but I know it's just
a simple pump with rubber parts. The hardest part is RnRing the carb.
YMMV

Most likely culprit is a hole in the accel pump diaphragm ... they do wear
out . Had a helluva hard time figuring out where that gas smell on my bike
was coming from until it suddenly got worse ... you could see the fuel
drippin' out of the little rubber accordion boot on the pump shaft .

Yup.
Easy to replace too.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Called a local dealer and the service
mgr acted like I was speaking another language when I asked if the
Keihin carb could be rebuilt, stating that they don't usually work on
bikes older than 1999.Guess I'll consult my manual or find a local
indy shop.
