A round on me and a double for anyone that has some good info I ain't
thought of yet (which ain't much)

I got my first two ever long distance trips coming up 2k in May and 8k
in June.

Being as these will be my first trip longer than a couple hundred
miles I'm interested in picking the community brain, as it were.

Mostly I'll be staying on couches with a nice hotel in the middle of
both trips but will bring a tent for a few nights under the stars.

I've a 07 FLHT that I've outfitted with a backrest, cruise control,
radio, GPS and Kuryakyn Grantour trunk. For clothing I've a waterproof
set (Tour Master two piece, Hein Gerckie boots and alpine star gloves)
and am shopping for a mesh jacket and a half helmet for the hot dry
days.

I've been told to drink lots of water through the desert but what
else? How many miles can I do? I suspect 12 to 15 hour days should be
OK as I've done a hell of a lot more in a car.

What would you tell this olde FNG?  (:-

TIA!

Mileage in a day is a pretty personal thing. If you're not used to it,
be conservative at first and then stretch the days if you feel
comfortable. I don't like to ride more than about 650 miles in a day. I
can ride more, but I'm more rested if I don't. Add to that the
sightseeing factor. Personally, I want to be able to stop and smell the
roses. There's a lot of country I haven't seen, and it's hard to see
cruisin' at 70-80 mph. YMMV and so will others, but that's my take on
it. When I've traveled I've normally wound up with a long day here and
there broken up by shorter days when destinations weren't so far apart.
Kinda depends on where you're headed and why.

Also, pack light. You can always do laundry on the road. Take what you
need, but need what you take. If you have no medical reason not to,
drink something with electrolytes as well as water. I normally
alternate, especially when the humidity is high.

JMHO and all that ...

Don't pack top heavy.
Use the tour box for light stuff
If there is such a thing as high speed wobble it tends to show up when you
overload your tour box.
Don't forget - Cell phone , credit card, cash
And a phone number or 2 of someone related to RMH that can find someone near
where you call from in case of whatever
Have fun

Don't count on it. Maybe you can, but don't count on it. Heat
*exhausts* me. And drink WAY more water than you think you need. Carry
more water than you think you'll need too.
