A round of drinks.  It's the first day of summer and I've decided to get
some maintenance done on the Ural.  I wanted to pull the battery today and
clean up all the contacts, something that hasn't been done since I got it.
I also have some corrosion inhibitor that I want to try out and I'd like to
sand down the primer on the front section of the Daytona and get a coat of
paint on there.

I bought some rust inhibitor at a marine shop and thought I'd give it a go
on the top cover for the carbs, which is bare metal and looking pretty sad.
Here's a shot of one of the covers, the dark stuff is a little liquid
wrench, that stuff spreads like crazy.

Here's where the cover comes from, the top of the card.

Do ya see the spring there?  Well go back and take another look at the
length.  OK, now here's the other side.

Hmmm, the discrepancy might have something to do with this, which was
sitting in there when I removed the cover.

Anyway, I'll deal with that later.

For now I was just looking to clean the carb covers.  I wasn't getting
fancy, just gonna run the covers passed the wirewheel.  Part way through.

Once clean I sprayed it with CRC's Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor.
According to the able it leaves a transparent amber film on the metal, and
sure enough it does.

Now to find out if I can replace those nasty screws with something
stainless, and with an allen head rather than the phillips heads that are a
bit rusty.

As for the battery, I pulled it...

...,cleaned it and put some di-electric grease on the terminals.

What I'm wondering is if there's another spray on clear anti-corrosion
product I could use to compare the two.  I may be back later today with pics
of the Daytona frame.

snip down to

Yes there is. It is called BOES. It leaves a more or less clear somewhat
dull waxy layer that stays on for quite a while. It was developed by Boeing
as an anti corrosive for severe environments. You can usually find the stuff
in marine supply stores, air plane supply houses, or over the net.

Thanks Wayne, I'll put it on the list.  I've also heard about Iron Clad:

A machinist at work swears by it.  I'll right down all the suggestions and
likely buy the first one I can find locally.

That is it. A friend used it on his performance machine wheels (on his
Buell) whenever he took the bike to Daytona. They were bare polished
aluminum and would develop some corrosion after 3 days even if they were
heavily waxed. He would have to polish for at least a half hour on each
wheel when he got back to Tampa. An application of Boeshield before he rode
over cured the problem. I'd say spray and don't wipe for winter use and
spray and wipe off the excess if you want to use it the rest of the year. I
also have some friends that use it liberally on their boats that live in
salt water. It makes a real difference.

I'm sure there are other products that work just as well. However, this is
the only one I can personally "attest" to for whatever that is worth.
