Shirley, a libation for those in attendance.
Decided to take a morning ride today. Got out about 8:00, still
fairly comfortable temp wise. Since I have not been that way yet I
went south on Florida Ave/St Hwy 37. Not much traffic and speeds
around 50/60 mph for the most part. Seems there are several large
mines along the route. Very large crane/dragline set ups. Couldn't
get close or high enough to see the working end of the cables, but
considering the massive build of the superstructure, it musta been
big! Got caught by a train switching back and forth over the highway.
Just shut off the scoot and enjoyed the breeze. Kept on 37 till St
Hwy 62 then took a left towards Wauchula. Lots of citrus groves and
more mines. I really would like to get a close look at those
machines. Nice country. Even came across a couple of places where
the road had a slight incline!!! Of course, like a kid on a scooter I
raced down the other side...Bet I gained 1 1/2 mph!!!! Turned left on
St Hwy 17 and into Wauchula. Wauchula is a nice little town. Here in
FL I have noticed that Hwy's tend to split up with a block or two in
between the now one way sections. Sure takes the fun outa ridin
through the old downtown sections or ridin around the town square.
Anyway, stopped at a Sonic for an egg sandwich and a coffee. Sure was
hard to pass up on an Oreo Blast, but I managed to suppress the urge
to order a large!
Went back N on Hwy 17, stopped for gas on the edge of town and
continued North through Bowling Green. Kept on going past Fort Meade
and Homeland. Made it into Bartow and remembered why my nose kept
running. Forgot to take my allergy medicine before I left. Now I was
starting to sneeze cause they were cutting the grass along the road in
many places and of course I am allergic! Did I mention I forgot a
handkerchief? Of course, what else would I have forgotten? Stopped
at a gas station and grabbed a handfull of windshield wipes for the
rest of the trip. Hwy 17 is also Hwy 98/35/700, known as Bartow road.
I took a left on County rd 540A or Christina Rd. This road took me
West to Florida Ave about a 1/2 mile from where I started out.
All in all a nice quiet ride. Unfortunately, as is the case in FL,
the only curves were places the road builders appeared to have had
hangovers and were not able to hold a straight line!
Shirley a round for anyone bored enough to read this far. Make mine a
Bloody Mary.
