Hi folks, been some time since I posted last, and yes I know I don't
have a real news service. Working on that.
If Shirley is handy have what pleases you. I'll buy till I'm broke,
about $2 from now will do it.
Tud you still riding that hack?
Ok the problem. Speedo on an '03 FLHTCUI is acting up. Suddenly
drops to zero. Comes back sometimes on good bumps or if I lean hard
left. Worse on a hot day but doesn't seem to be related to how long
the motor has been running. When it goes to zero radio volume cuts
down by about half (yeah, I know, don't start on me) and if coming to
a stop idle is bad. I have heard of problems with the Speed Senor
but really think the problem lies elsewhere.
I have a service manual, have studied the schematics and there only
seems to be three or four wires from the sensor to the speedo. I
can't figure how the radio volume gets in the game.
Guys my hats in my hands, can't afford to take it in and have to get
it done on my own. Any ideas, suggestions or other useful info will
be appreciated.
I thank you, drink up!

I agree

Sounds like a frayed wire/wires somewhere to me. Good luck. I imagine
it's a lot easier with an FXD than a FLHTCUI.

Remove your Speed Sensor and clean it reinstall and test. Try the easy
things first.

Willie, thats the first thing I did today. Pulled it out and did not
see any debris on it, wiped it off and reinstalled. So unless it is
internal to the sensor that probably isn't the problem. While I was
at it I pulled the front fairing and checked as much wiring as I could
and reset the speedo plug in case of a dirty connector pin. Since I
had the seat off I cleaned the batterey terminals, check as much
wirring in that area that I could reach. Checked as many wire
terminals as I could find for tightness.
Most of the wiring is inside conduit so without cutting it all open
all I could do was feel and smell. Just didn't see anything that
looked like it had gotten hot or chaffed through the sleeve.
After getting everything back together took a short ride. Speedo is
working although I saw a couple of monetary fluctuations where the
needle dropped a bit. It's not as hot today and heat rreally seems to
be a big player in this problem so may have to wait for more heat. II
really don't need the speedo, pretty much know what speed I have at
different rpm's but the messed up idle is a problem given my route to
work with some stop and go.
My plan is to replace the Speed Senor if the problem continues, as
that is the easist thing to do, and a whole lot faster than chasing a
short. If I do that and still have the problem I may take my wifes
suggestion and just get a new one!

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the security module. My work
around was to turn off and on the ignition
