Greetings to everyone. Shirley, please set up a round for the house.
I'd like a big glass of sweet tea, with lemon.

It's been hot in Texas this year. We've had 83 days in Austin so far
that were over 100 degrees, with more forecasted for this week. The
high temperature was 112. That's hot. Too hot to ride, especially if
you get stuck in traffic. After one such ride where it took me an hour
to travel 5 miles, I figured I'd better change my oil. I could smell
the bike cooking during the ride, and the oil was thin and black, even
though it was less than 3K since the last change.

I decided it was time to look into oil coolers. Harley's cooler just
didn't make much sense to me; without a fan, it didn't work when you
needed it the most - when you weren't moving. I'd had my eye on the
UltraCool oil cooler because it was fan assisted, but I hadn't heard
much about it and was sitting on the fence. I checked Jagg's site, and
lo and behold they now have a fan assisted cooler as well, so I took
the plunge.

Installation was fairly straight forwarded, but for some reason I
couldn't get the fan to work, which is controlled by a heat sensor. I
though I must had done something wrong, because even after idling for
10 minutes, it would not come on. I decided to call Jagg the following
week, and after fixing a small leak at one of the clamps, I took her
for a ride. About an hour later, I pulled into a convenience store &
hit the kill switch. I heard a very loud roar, which surprised me for
a second. It was the fan, I guess I never got the bike hot enough.

The cooler seems to work well, and the fan comes every time I ride the
bike. I haven't noticed a big drop in engine heat, but my
understanding is that the coolers are designed to keep the oil from
overheating, not necessarily to cool the bike. I don't have an oil
temp gauge, so I don't have any before and after figures to report.

It wasn't cheap, about $500, but I felt I had to do something if I was
going to continue to ride this summer. I haven't seen any real data on
how well these things work to actually protect the engine, I bought it
mainly on gut instinct.

to report my experience.

Somewhere in the RMH archives is a computer fan assisted oil cooler
topic....Basically the idea is to take two computer fans (12VDC) and put
them in front of the oil cooler. I took it a step further and had a
metal shop fabricate a scoop type arrangement to pull in the max air and
a handle bar switch for the fans. Works very well. The fans generally
last a couple of seasons and a rock is usually the main culprit.

 I have the Jaggs cooler without the fan, I have the additional by-pass valve
P/N: 4000 that routes the oil back and not into the cooler.
