"Noisy Glide to Little Bug, you there?"
Wife picked up daughter at school on schedule in the bug while I
waited for a break in the rain at home. Never got one. At the time I
knew they headed south, I started out intending to meet them at the
junction of 405 and 5. They had a Cobra unit with external antenna in
the bug and we were all going in the same direction, so we didn't
think it'd be too hard to meet up.
Harder than we thought, I guess. When I thought I was in range I
would send out a call every five minutes or so in between the trucker
talk. Geeze, there's a base station south of Hillsboro that's way
over power, and the guy just won't shut up.
Never was successful picking them up, but got to listen to the trucker
chatter, which was a little unusual.
"Well, it's irritating the hell outta me, I tell ya. She's just goin
on and on about nothin"
"Mel, what's the difference, you go on and on about nothin"
(laughter)
"Well I think it's funny."
"I seen her. She went past me a mile or so back. She's pretty, kinda
looks kinda like Ali McGraw."
(What the hell?)
At the first gas stop I called little bug on the cell, established
they were 30 miles south of me. Also established that daughter had
gotten tired of calling me and had decided to perform a running
commentary of the trip, what she saw out the window, and how much she
disliked this stupid CB. I'm not an idiot, it wasn't hard to put two
and two together.
I'm familiar with that stretch of road, where the speed traps are
positioned and where it's safe to make up time, so tried to catch up
with the bug in the next 50 miles.
In my ears: "Wow! That bike just flew past." (pause) "I guess he's
going home for the holidays."
I guess so. Side note, the bike is absolutely stable at 80. Miles,
not kilometers.
We met up around 5:00 for dinner and managed to stay together after
that. The first 100 miles was POURING rain and about 38 degrees, but
the rain lightened up and it got a little warmer as we continued
south. Got some more rain about 9:00 in the Siskews but not as cold
as it might have been. Stopped in Redding for the night, then up
early the next morning to get to old sac by noon for the parade.
I regret having to go through the siskews at night. It's a pretty
view and I might have gotten some pictures. But you do what you have
to and there will be better views later.
Noisy Glide was comfortable and trouble free the trip down. No
problems in the twisties and didn't lean out appreciably at higher
altitudes. Mileage was consistently about 38 - 39 MPG. I'm still
enjoying the hell out of the bike, even in the rain.
We got to old sac just as the parade was starting. The Delta King let
me park the bike in their shuttle area. Damned nice of them.

The Ultra hiding behind the Delta King sign is mine. Last night a
couple with a teenage daughter passed and admired it. The girl jumped
into the saddle for a photo. Normally I object to that, but she was
so damned cute I decided to hold me peace.
Couldn't help but notice that everything was more expensive this year,
most notibly alcohol, so we didn't drink quite as much as past years.
There's two more days of jazz and limited alcohol before the girls
head home and I'm on my own. More updates later.

I'm not a member of face book so I wasn't able to expand the pictures for
more than 2 seconds, but from what I see it looks like you had a good time.

Well, that sucks. They're also up on the family blog, which shouldn't
have any stupid restrictions like that. Here:

The first couple of pages are the parade, followed by photos at three
of the larger venues. I like taking photos of the bartenders
(especially if they're cute), performers, and patrons who came in
costume or are otherwise interesting to look at. While you're there,
you can see photos from previous jazz festivals and other events, like
the Oregon Country Fair. (Photos are not work safe.) The family
website started to go stale when Facebook became a big thing, but I'm
thinking I should resume keeping it up to date.
I put a few of the better photos on www.nikonimages.com, a website
created by a friend of mine that he keeps reminding me I should be
promoting.. My tag there is roc97007. Not all photos are work safe.
Ron (From my alternate account.)
