Finally go this place to put some Guinness on tap so get it while it's
available.
Cameras. Been getting by with my old Nikon 4300 for a long time.
During said long time I've bought my wife a Sony Cybershot DSCT30
(miserable camera)and my daughter a Sony Cybershot DSC-N2 (excellent
camera).
Me? I've been getting by looking at digital SLR's and trying to
decide if I wanted to make the jump. Now the reviews I'm reading and
the pictures I'm looking at taken by the Nikon D300 are making me want
to take the leap.
So I'm thinking what I could stick on my bike for $2,500 or so that
would make me go that route rather than the camera. I got the bike
setup pretty much the way - performance wise - I want it so I'm
leaning hard towards the camera.
Any opinions?
And if Billy da Roach is reading this the patch ain't cheap any more.

Take a look at the Canon line....more specifically the Rebel xTI....
10.1 MP moderately lightweight - I picked one up 6 months or so ago,
and I'm quite happy with it..

One thing you have to watch with a digital slr is the camera has a
multiplier so a 100mm zoom lense can really be more like a 160mm zoom for
the same distance compared to a regular camera with a lense this is more
important for the wide angle lenses like I have a 18mm lense and the rebels
have a multiplier so it is more like a 40 mm lense.. I take pictures of
houses and use the wide angle so I don't have to get back 100s of feet to
get the whole house in. The more exspensive cameras have a 1 to 1 ratio
with the lense but those camera's are the professional and are in the $3000.
have fun with the salesman or woman.. they look at you real confused when
you ask them about this....
from canon web site the EOS Rebel xsi: Canon EF lenses (including EF-S
lenses)
(35mm-equivalent focal length is approx.1.6x the lens focal length)
Where as the Canon EOS 5D:Originally developed by Canon, this
high-resolution, 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor sets the standard for its
class, featuring a remarkable 12.8 million effective pixels for a maximum
recorded resolution of 4,368 x 2,912 pixels.
until I can afford the 5d I love my pocket canon powershot A95 only thing I
don't like is the fact after you press the button it takes 2 seconds before
the picture is taken so actions shots are almost always missed.... oh well,
got it on ebay, I only paid 120 bucks and the memory cards will work in the
5d when I can pick one of those up for under 2 grand....

Donna,
actually riding around in the saddle bag of my tour pack may be the
easiest thing my cameras do. this is where the professional metal bodied
cameras get separated from the plastic one. remember i have the same
opinion of nikon plastic as i have of cannon plastic. plastic is plastic
and look and the manufacturers shutter cycle ratings for realistic
durability measurements. check out some off topic spam but still decent
pics. luckily for me good subject matter makes up for poor technique.

for a newby to DSLR's the d200 may be a bit easier to operate. until they
learn the basics of fstop, shutter speed, depth of field, etc; the scene
modes in the d200 should make shooting a tad easier. the d300 has no scene
modes. it does have a program mode but that is not as intuitive for
specific types of shooting by new converts to dslrs. the d200 really only
gives up 2 mp's and 12 bit raw as opposed to 14 bit raw. since the human
eye can't see the number of colors that 12 bits capture nor can any printer
reproduce them the added feature of 14 bit is not really relevant to 90% of
todays applications. i can get technical and tell you where the benefits of
the extra 2 bit lay but unless your a true photoshop guru it will neve be
utilized.
i am fixing to buy me another d200. with the factory refurbs street price
around 800 bucks it is the most bang for your buck in a dslr. IMHO and
other disclaimers. for the 500 dollar difference between it and the d300
the extra savings can be rolled into glass. after shooting for a week with
the 300 i have noticed in a frame by frame comparison that the 200 shoots a
sharper image than the particualr 300 i had access to. (using the same
glass and subject)
speaking of d70's. last week i was shooting with three nikon dslr's and my
kodak pro14 dcs. it is a 14 megapixel full frame sensor camera. between
the kodak, a d200, a d300 and a d70 most of my frames were shot with the
d70. why? because of the size of the individual sensor sites on the
sensor. the lower megapixel count on the same sphysical size sensor of the
d200-300 means that there is a little less noise in the shadows of the
capture. i am so familiar with my d70 from years of use i know exactly how
it is going to perform in any given circumstance. here are a couple of
frames from the d70 that i shot last week. these are resamples straight
from the low res jpeg capture. not photoshopped raw images...
