It was a tough call.  I really really really really really really really
really really really really really really really really really really really
really really really really really really really really really really really
really really really really....

... wanted an IronMan 250 mig welder with a spool gun to start doing some
work with aluminum...  But for 2 grand I figured the only one in the house
who would get any real enjoyment out of it was me.  Sure I planned to build
some cool stuff with it, but mostly for ME.  Maybe for my birthday.

Christmas is coming up and I was hoping, but alas I found another toy
instead.  Well actually two of them.

By the time I was 12 I could drive.  My mom taught me how to drive taking
the trash to the dump in our old 57 Dodge pickup truck.  Can't do that any
more.  Puttting a kid behind the wheel of a truck around here is just plain
crazy.  It was always illegal, but where I grew up I could drive on desert
roads without another vehicle around for miles.

Anyway, I was thinking, we got 5 acres here and there are tons of places
that are legal to do some off road driving.  A pair of these might be good
to start teaching basic skills.  Not road stuff, but how to go and stop and
not run over a bush, etc...

Besides...  THEY LOOK LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF FUN!!!!!

There went my welder.  They should drop ship from the factory tommorrow and
be delivered to my shop by the end of next week.  Now I just have to figure
out one thing.  How to keep myself from taking htem out for a spin before
Christmas.  Especially since I have to do some assembly and test them
first...  Ah...  Now it would make me an irresponsible daddy if I didn't
thoroughly test them first right.  LOL.

Seriously to start out with I'll set up a block on the throttle linkage to
limit their speed.  I figure to put an hour meter on them too so I can dole
out useage or limit useage as a reward/punishment to the kids.  3 As on your
report card.  3 extra hours of useage over the next month.  Got an F... in
PE.  No cart time for you this month.

now i know why i don't have kids.  so that i can keep buying welders....
the ol lady recently asked me why i needed five welders.  about halfway into
my explanation of  the differences between stick, mig and tig her eyes
started to glaze over.  make sure and throw in acronyms like gmaw, gtaw,
smaw lots of stuff about the differences betwen ac & dc and it won't be long
till the ol ladies eyes glaze over like your talking about differential
equations.  heck, the more i think about it, the five welders i currently
own are probably not enough.  maybe i need a nice Christmas present to
myself...

I already got two welder myself.  Well, three if you count the oxy acetylene
rig for mild stuff and coathanger repairs on thin stuff.  I just need one
more....

Actually I think my old lady would have rather I bought the welder.  She
commented that she treats the kids when parents let them get stupid on power
toys at the dunes.  Besides the welder would have been cheaper.  LOL.

HEY!  Maybe I can explain how buying the welder will save on repair costs...

<snip>

there you go.  just tell the kids on the sly that there is an extra twenty
dollar bill to the first one that can do frame damage to their new ride.
you get to watch them go crazy behind the wheel and tell the ol lady that it
looks like your going to need that new welder to fix the cart.  your just
not sure you can weld such an important piece back with the old one.  yada,
yada, yada.

on the subject of new toys for Christmas i just dropped the dime on a new
metal break for doing more detailed work thatn i can do with my 8' chicago
break.  a brand shiney new roper whitney # 99 metal break.
http://www.roperwhitney.com/bending/1-4_2.cfm   the funny thing is that the
thing says it is for making signs and i might even use it for that.  i was
not really thinking about signs when i ordered it but the tax man doesn't
have to know that.  of course it will pay for its self with just one sign
job then it can move on to bigger and better things like hot rod and
motorsickle parts.

i am also thinking about buying the shop a powdercoating system for
Christmas.  i wonder just how many signs are going to get powdercoated with
it?
