Mama's computer screen (Acer P191W 19" LCD) is sick ... screen is dim and
flickery. It's been going dark on us lately when waking it up , turn power
off then a few seconds later power on has brought it back - until today . I
have the unit apart , checking the power board for bad caps since that's
listed as a primary cause of monitor problems - found 2 bulged tops , none
leaking . I'll be visitin' the local RS for replacements , and hoping that's
all it needs .
Anybody out there have experience with repairing these ? Would I be better
off looking for a replacement at a yard sale ? We have a small CRT monitor
on it for now so the g-kids can still play their games , but it sure ain't
optimum ...

When I bought my latest TV, I looked on line to see any issues others
may have had with the brand. At one time they had an issue with bad
capacitors. It sounded easy enough to replace them that I was willing
to try it if I had an issue (I haven't, knock wood.) Go for it, what's
the worst that could happen?

I could end up with a dead monitor , that's what !! Oh , wait . I already
have a dead monitor , don't I ? Guess I got nothing but about 15 bucks and
some time to lose . Several of the guys over at the metalworking group think
it sounds like it's worth a try . Apparently not all that uncommon .

There are videos on Youtube showing how to do it. I reckon you won't
have a bit of trouble.

I've done a little PCB work over the years . At one time I was going to make
my own boards for a stereo amp , but the budget eased so I bought one .
Thru hole components are no prob , I recently built my own DRO for the
mill from a kit . I ain't messin' with SMT components though .
