I'm wondering what the proper oil filter is for my '98 FXD. I
currently have a long 63812-90 filter on the bike (not sure if this
was the proper one for my bike). I just went the the dealer for a new
filter and they sold me a short filter 63805-80A.

I can't find anything in the owner manual or the repair manual that
indicates which filter number I should use (short filter or long
filter).

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

According to the 2007 accessories catalog:

63812-90
Black, Extra Long. Fits '91-'98 Dyna models

63805-80A
Black, Long. Fits same as P/N 63796-77A

63796-77A
Chrome, Long. Fits '80-'98 FLT, FLHT, FLHR, '82-'94 FXR, '84-'98
Softails, '84-'95 FXRP, FLHTP, and late '84-later XL models.

So it sounds as if the 63812-90 (or 63813-90 in chrome) would be the
correct one for your bike, although I think the one they gave you is
probably okay. If it bothers you, take it back and get the right one.

Thank you for the info. I'll follow your recommendation and take it
back. The more the filter the better. I'll ask them about the
difference as well.
happy new year!

The 98s had the longer filter. The short ones came out in 99
when the FXDs went to the 88inch motor, and from then on,
the dealers would tell me the shorter one was ok for my 98.
I told them the shorter one was ok for _their_ 98, bu _my_
98 needed the longer one. This ain't from the book, it's
from my memory. YMMV

roach, '98 FXDirty bought new.

I always used the longer one on my '98 FXDWG.
