Oil filter worms

 
Grab one on me.  I'll have a double Dickel and a draft its been a long
weekend.

The Dyna has been sitting for several months.  I haven't ridden since around
the first of this year.  It was around then that I started some new meds
that screwed with my equilibrium and coordination.  In spite of this I
thought I'd take the bike for a spin around the area this weekend.  Then,
maybe work my way up to feeling comfortable enough for a longer ride.

So, I charged the battery, fired it up, and went on an errand run into town.
When I get to the store, the right side of the bike is covered in gas/oil
and it is barely running.  I turned abound and limped home.  What a mess.
Degreased everything with simple green and used brake cleaner on the rear
disk.  Since it sat so long, and I never turn the fuel petcock off (hey, its
got a vacuum shut-off right?), I figure some gas must have made its way into
the crankcase.  Effectively overfilling it, then blew out the head
breathers.  Well, it made sense at the time.

Anywho, I decided to change the oil cuz, to me, it smelled like it had gas
in it.  I also decided to cut the oil filter open, just incase something
else let go and was boogering up the oil pump.

To my surprise, there was something resembling worms in the oil filter.
That's what they looked like when it first opened up.  Upon closed
inspection, they are more like chewed up bits of rubber band.  No more than
1/4 inch long, and soft like rubber.  There were a heck of a lot of them.
They fairly well coated the inside of the housing, and there were many
embeded in the filter element folds.

Prolly going to open the cam chest next and pull the oil pump.

I'll post a couple pics across the street.  Anybody have any ideas where
these may have come from?

I missed it too.  Just though it might be something leftover from last Oct.
