Well, at 113K miles it is time to reward my '97 FLHTCI with some new
cables....is the price differential worth stainless clutch and throttle
cables? I'm also leaning towards using a single cable on the throttle.

I've heard good things about SS brake hoses for obvious reasons.

Hmmm, I might want to think about the same thing m'self sometime, but
with no issues so far at 140k miles, it hasn't crossed my mind.

I guess I'm a little cautious after some cable breakage I experienced
back in the '80s and early '90s. A very vivid memory was a clutch cable
suddenly letting go at an intersection. That kill switch on the right
handlebar got immediate action.

Yeah, had that happen to me in downtown Atlanta in rush hour in 87.  I
managed to ride the bike about 3 miles by shifting with no clutch and
pushing the bike up to a slow roll and slamming it into first to get
going.  The bike I had at that time (1980 KZ1300) was notorious for
snapping clutch cables, so I always carried a spare, I just needed to
get out of the traffic somewhere and replace it.

Cables are kinda on my mind, too. Only 55k on mine, but ya never know.

Which leads me to the next point. I have a riding friend who has a 2003
Electra Glide. He just put about $6k into the thing. 95 inch upgrade, 6
speed transmission, better oil pump, and a bunch of other engine stuff.
I got to thinkin' 'bout all that. Seems to me that lots of folks will
decide that their bike needs some attention and they have all sorts of
performance upgrades done. That's all well and good, but what happens
when your bike (with the brandy-gnu "oh-my-gawd" 120 inch engine) snaps
the clutch cable, or when you hafta make some emergency maneuvers and
your suspension is worn out so you crash? A big engine won't help you
out then.

I think that if I was gonna spend a bunch on the bike that I'd maybe
rebuild it and keep it an 88, or leave in the 5-speed and spend some of
that money on getting the forks re-done...have new swing-arm bushings
installed...replace the clutch and throttle cables...new wheel bearings,
etc. Instead of being able to pull a wheelie with a 900 pound touring
bike it might be better to put some money into keeping it reliable. I
mean, how many times have you been stranded on the highway because you
didn't have enough horse-power? How many times have you been stranded
because some inexpensive part (like a throttle cable) shot craps? The
latter is probably the more common.

So when the time comes to sink some cash into my bike I'm gonna try to
reach a happy medium and get some more snort out of it...*and* replace a
bunch of the little shit that no one thinks about until it breaks.

JMHO.

P.S. My friend had about 80K miles on his when he had the upgrades done,
and when I asked him if he had the drive belt replaced while they had it
apart, he said, "Hmmmm. I never thought about that."
