Started in Wall, SD. Ended the day in Staples, MN. Farther than the
original goal of Wahpeton ND but less than the desired goal of Brainerd MN.
US 14 between Wall and Pierre is not a bad road. Lots of farmland, green
rolling hills, and pastures. Very little traffic. Saw dead porcupines
along the road, never seen those before. Very far between gas stations
though which explains why Piper used my spare bottle of gas and Steve
ran out as we hit the gas station. That little 11 oz bottle got Piper
12.7 miles to the gas station, I shit you not. He coasted in to the
station in Pierre.
After Pierre we were headed north on 83 when Bob Mann passed us. He
turned around and joined us, he'll ride with us through tomorrow. We ate
lunch at Swannies in Ipswich SD. New place, very good food, cute
waitress. Strong winds from there to I-29. Piper's horn broke at the gas
station at US12/I-29, zip tied it back together again and off we went.
I-29 to North Dakota was uneventful, interstate but not unpleasant.
Started looking for a room shortly after we left Fergus Falls MN. Nice
(BEAUTIFUL) roads but not enjoyable because of the several deer I saw
and the sun was quickly setting. Finally pulled in to Staples MN about
8:30 PM. Rooms at the Super 8.
Bar just down the street, Captain Ron's. Just standard bud/bud
light/shit beer but very cold and one of the best cheeseburgers I've had
in quite a while. Watched a good part of the NASCAR race, listened to
the drunks, and found out that Bob can identify Jessica Simpson songs
played on the jukebox.
