Shirley, the card is on the bar, treat everyone to a few rounds and
have urself a couple.
I been lurking round here for quite awhile now, reading the posts,
riding along on the posted
trips, following some of the advice, and in general just enjoying myself.
I am 65 yo, live in northwest Ga, and been riding motorcycles for 53
years (all that means or
implies is, i been riding motorcycles 53 years) Started out on a 250
Zundapp, then a
Triumph Bonneville, and Harleys ever since.
I am flying out to San Diego June 22, renting a Harley for 9 days and
riding the PCH. My son will join me in LA and we plan on riding to
Cresent City at least, maybe even further north.
I have done a lot of internet looking and planning, but nothing beats
info from someone who has done the same ride. The scenery alone would
be enough for me I think, but I would like some advice from someone
else, if it wouldn't be much trouble?
Thanks alot and any ideas would be appreciated.

plan for some cold weather, also head out to Yosemite for at least a day or so
in the park if you have not been there, it is the MUST see out there
be sure to ride through a tree in the N Ca redwoods
make no other plans and enjoy the trip and the coast line

Torrey Pines Park - paragliding off the cliffs.
Just north of San Dieago (20 miles), The Hide Away Cafe in Solana Beach for
breakfast.
Watch for tanks in the hills around San Clemente... sometimes you'll see
them running around.
From Redondo Beach to Newport Beach is 38 miles.
It will take you 3 1/2 hours on the PCH.
Venice Beach
Santa Monica Pier
Topanga Canyon Blvd.
Santa Barbara (if you've seen one shore town, you've seen this one... would
pass on this)
From Santa Barbara to Morro Bay (100 miles), there's about 30 miles of good
riding.
Morro Bay to Lompoc sucked. Flat, farms, good speed though.
From Cayucos north is very nice.
Pebble Beach, Carmel - I think you can do the 17 mile loop on motorcycle
now.
It used to be closed (the moneyed people kept it closed)... but now you've
got to pay.
Was $8.50 back in '06.
Monterey - Cannery Row
Monterey to Santa Cruz is all highway.
Half Moon Bay
On the north side of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area is a great
spot for pictures.

Watch for elk between Bodega Bay (Afred Hitchcock's The Birds) and Crescent
City.

Avenue of the Giants. Must do.
If you want to do some more riding past Crescent City... take 199 to Oregon.
But then you have to turn around because it's pretty booring in Oregon.
ASSHOLE#104 Len

I make a similar trip every other year coming
south from Everett, WA to Santa Rosa. I pick up
the PCH in Astoria, Oregon and it makes for a 1000
mile trip one way that Google Maps says should
take 21 hours. For comparison's sake the same trip
down I-5 takes 850 miles and 13 hours. I can't
address the part of the ride south of Santa Rosa
beyond saying that the biggest PITA is getting
past LA and SF. The Avenue of the Giants is
definitely not to be missed. If it were my 9 days
and I had to deliver the rental back to San Diego,
I'd budget 7 days up coast as far into Oregon as
that'll get you then a 2 day blast down I-5 back
to SD.

I'm now an East Coaster, and haven't ridden west of the Tetons....yet. So
I'm green with envy about your upcoming ride. But before my two wheel days
I lived on the west coast and I can second the recommendations you have
already received. The one thing I would stress is your riding gear. The
weather is notoriously fickle along the coast line- even on the same day.
Be prepared for some chilly and drizzly weather, but don't be surprised if
it gets a bit on the warm side at times. My FLHTCI and I have seen it all
and I can tell you with complete sincerity that quality riding clothes will
enhance your pleasure factor exponentially.
