Card is on the counter for anyone bored enough to listen to this.
Short version is I got some hail damage in Sturgis. Didn't know hail
came in plus sizes. Bike is a 98 Heritage with factory custom paint
(don't ask me how it can be factory and custom). It's atomic red and
gray with a tank decal that has the Harley Davidson name over a spoked
wheel and tire. The paint is pearl and project different colors in
different light. The code for the paint/decal combination is 071.
I had to replace a rear fender last year and it came from Harley,
already painted and the colors matched perfectly. This time, the
insurance company is calling for primed parts and paint in the field.
I'm getting conflicting information on the availablity of these colors
to the aftermarket. More importantly, I'm not sure that the decal is
available. I called the shop that was recommended by the insurance
company and they assured me that they can get and/or do anything. They
wouldn't even write down the paint code and check it out. I tried to
find a contact point on the HD website but, not surprisingly, there is
nothing that is worth a hoot on that site.
Does anyone know anything about the availablilty of these colors and
decal or where I might be able to find out for certain? If there is
an issue, I need to renegotiate with the insurance company.
Shirley, make sure nobody's thirsty while they contemplate this
problem. Thanks.

Very easy to explain. Harley has a "custom paint shop" Although I
didn't know they had them in '98.

Did you call Harley as well?
After all, "Field painting" could cost THEM more, unless HDI doesn't
make that batch of paint.

Again, did you call yer local dealer that is reputable and knowledgeable?

First see if there is one of those "paintless Dent remover" guys that
can have at it in your area.
Second, check out your better AUTOBODY supply stores to see if they can
match the paint. (PPG, Dupont,Sikkens,S-W, etc... all have advanced
color matching gizmos.)
Decals? Yer on yer own there!

Thanks for the drink.
Now you know why I like bikes that are black!
The ONLY real color a Harley should be! :)

Yes, I get to keep the old parts. I like Felix's suggestion of
checking with the dent guy. If they can fix it, I'll still have my
old parts and my old paint. Don't know if they can do it, though. I
have four dents in the front fender and two or three dents in the
right gas tank.

Paintless dent guy once told me he was 2 for 13 on attempts on H-D tanks cuz
they're so stout.. Sez the best candidates are shallow and on a smooth
surface. YMMV.
