Hello,
I have a 1990 FLHTC. It has the stock double row chain primary and clutch.
The bike has about 55,000 miles and is turbocharged.
I had a leak in the primary, lost all the oil and more or less ruined the
primary chain and burned up the clutch. Of course, all those burnouts
did not help either.
So, since I need to replace the primary chain and clutch anyway, I was
thinking this might be a good time to put in a primary belt drive kit and
vent the primary somehow for cooling.
I see all sorts of primary belt drive kits on ebay for softails, but really
nothing within the same price range for rubber mounted bikes. I would
consider going with an open primary with a belt guard, but would just as
soon keep it covered. So I do not have to replace the inner primary. I
figure I can just put on a vented derby cover and remove the adjustment
cover on the outer primary cover.
Anybody out there put a primary belt drive on their rubber mounted bagger
and have any experiences with it that would care to share? Where would be
good place to buy a similar kit?
Thanks,
CJ

I can't answer your question ... but got some I hope you can answer .
What do you hope to gain by going open belt ?
What kind of power are you making , at what boost pressure , and are you
running the stock bottom end ? Do you tour on this bike , or is it just for
showin' off ?
Mine's stock , pretty much , and I ride it as often and far as possible

Snag,
It does not have to be an open belt; an enclosed belt would be fine. I went
with a closed belt primary on my 1961
Panhead and my 1947 UL and it made both bikes run smoother and eliminated
some maintenance. Since I need to replace
the primary stuff anyway, I thought if I was going to change the bagger to a
belt primary that now would be a good time.
Before I screwed up the primary, I was having issues with clutch slippage as
well. Most of the belt primary systems I have looked at
have a beefed up clutch which is another plus with making the switch.
As far as the turbocharger. It is an aerocharger. I put it on because the
bike used to have a factory sidecar on it and the bike was
a little sluggish at highway cruising speeds. The engine is basically stock
except for some top end work (flowing, bigger intake valves and
a Mikuni HS45). I am getting some oil seepage where the jugs join the
crankcase, but other then that the motor is tight. I do not know
if I can attribute that to the turbo or not.
Full boost is 12 PSI, but there is no reason to run it that hard for any
length of time. Cruising along at 70, she makes about 3 PSI. The
bike REALLY starts to come on hard at about 4 PSI and pulls strongly all the
way up to full boost.
Basically, the bike is my commuter bike. I ride it as often as I can when
the weather is good. I made a few trips on it from Tampa to Atlanta,
Tampa to North Carolina and the twice yearly jaunts to Daytona, but
basically it is just an around town bike. I ride the other bikes as well.
Thanks for the reply,
CJ
