Hi there.
Just found this group and I hope someone can help me with this.
I'm new to motorcycling so please be gentle if this is a stupid
question. I recently bought a '98 Road King at a dealership which I
LOVE. But even though the specs say the tank holds 5 gallons, I've yet
to be able to fill it with more than 2 gallons even when the gauge
reads almost in the red. So does that mean my gauge is off or what? I
drove around today a little bit in traffic and then some on the highway
and got about 50 miles on 1.75 gallons. It doesn't seem to be leaking
fuel.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, your gauge is incorrect. Fill it up, ride it your regular 150 miles
in the next three weeks, then see how much gas it takes without looking
at that gauge. Sure is thirsty in here.

I'm buying while Kim reads the writing on the wall..

Did you get any kinda of warrenty from the dealer?  Take it back and have
them fix it.  In the meantime, read www.rmhfaq.com then come back and
introduce yerself

If it's carbureted, fill it up, set the trip odo to zero and then let
it hit reserve.  If it's fuel injected, do the same, only don't let it
run out of gas, just go 130 - 150 miles, then fill up.  Calculate your
mileage.  After that, live by the odometer, reset it to zero every
time you fill up.  The gauges on HD are mostly there for a gentle
reminder, not to be considered highly accurate.

Like the others, I'd suggest you read the FAQs, they are there for the
greater good.

Heh heh heh....I do that in my car too.....I've been stranded by fuel
gauges a few times, hell, hadda run gas to the wife once.."But Honey,
the gauge thingy sez it's full." Yes Dear, but yer trip meter sez you
went 250 miles since the last fill up."...both cars get filled at the
200 mile mark whether they need it or not....the bike is a little
harder to figger, so I just look in the tanks every time I shut 'er
down.
