I slow down, tap the horn (Stebel) , they shit and back off and I
accelerate briskly into the horizon. Never been bitten but came close.
I've heard from my letter carrier (US Mail) that standard pepper spray
doesn't work on canines. They and meter readers carry a special spray
developed just for dogs.

The slow down and then accelerate as you come up next to him usually
works. Throws their timing off.

I was on the backroads with my 250 Allstate years ago and rolled some
fleahound with the front crashbar. Since the apparent owner was
sitting in the van seat on the porch of his shack I turned around for
a status check as a courtesy.
"Is he OK?" I axed.
"Fuck him", sez the gent. "Teach him to stay out of the road".
