It was about a bad a storm as I had ever tried to ride through.
Horizontal rain mixed with sand and some of the worst winds ever... worse
than the tornado Steph insists I led them into in 1999 :-).
Plus, Albequrque (how the fuck do you spell that?) on a Friday afternoon
during rush hour in a thunderstorm? I'll get a room instead...

Scott had suggested we take 260 across northern Arizona. This was an
excellent idea and the ride was almost perfect. 260 turns into 60 in
Springerville, AZ... but only if you take the left hand turn :-).
Otherwise, you're on 180 and heading towards southern New Mexico. But it's a
great road, so I didn't mind too much :-). I had the map, but Beate was
leading...
So we gas up in Alpine, AZ, and I show Beate where we are on the map.
She wants me to lead, so I show her that we're gonna take 180 past Luna and
then take 12 up to 60 and then go east to I-25.
Hwy 12 is a long, long highway. And there's a HUGE storm cell just dumping
sheets and sheets of rain.... and we're heading right towards it. Luckily it
moved east faster than we did.
So we get to Socorro and Beate needs an air mattress for camping, and we stop
at the local WalMart. Then we stopped to get a bite to eat at Dennys, which
is where we spot Steve's group riding by.
Then I saw this huge cell moving in from the southwest (probably the one that
Steve talks about), so I (to myself) plan to take my time eating a late
lunch... and mainly watch the storm's progress out the window.
When we hit the road, I'm hoping that we had missed the worst of it... but we
didn't...

We took 87 outa Phoenix and caught 260 in Payson...turned
right and rode to Show Low.......grabbed 60 in Springerville
and headed east.
Scott was right about 260, it's a great ride......you
probably snagged it up in Camp Verde, ran across the
Mogollon Rim (Old General McClellan Trail)......great riding
up there.

IIRC, we almost took 260 out of Show Low instead of 60. Steve wanted to.
George and I whined about the time. <g>

Ah, Springerville. They like putting their name on signs. Coming into
the town on 60 there was a sign that read, "Welcome to Springerville."
OK.
Fifty feet later:
"Springerville 4 Miles."
One mile later:
"Springerville City Limit"
Another mile later:
"Welcome to Springerville"
Two miles later:
"Springerville City Limit"
Make up yer frikkin' minds!

Speaking of missing left turns... I was leading through Socorro but had
no idea that 60 was just going to evaporate. Nearly missed the left-hand
turn to get to I-25N (stranded Steve and George at the light). Either I
missed it, or there was no sign indicating 60 continued on as I-25--and
I definitely don't recall dual 25/60 signage on I-25.
Yer probably lucky you stayed in Socorro, as that storm was wicked--or
at least the wind was. If the wind was just >< this much stronger I
think I would have gone off-road.
Good seeing ya', Rich, and glad you made it home OK.

I got home around 1330 today...
But I didn't make it home without something on the bike breaking...
So there I am, just coming outta Needles on I-40 heading towards Barstow. I
had just topped off my tank (@ $4.09 a gallon), got a 5 LB bag of ice for the
Camelbak and doused my jacket and pants with water and headed out. Somewhere
between Needles and Barstow, I had to slow for construction, and went to
downshift, but my toe didn't find its normal shift lever.
So I try it again. Again no lever.
I look down, and I see the shift lever tip down under the floor board.
Fuck.
So I pull over and check it out.
It appears that the lever has stripped where it attaches. So I figure I'll
just take the heel shifter off and turn it around and use it like that. But
I can't get the heel shifter loosened enough to get it off.
Then I realize I just need to be able to downshift, because I can upshift
with the heel. So out comes Mr. Duct Tape and some wrapping and twisting and
more wrapping, I've got a nice duct-tape-rope attaching the shifter to the
shift linkage allowing me to downshift just fine.

Yeah... their Taj-Maj-Tent... nice if you have the packing room.
And you really don't wanna pitch yer tent close to Chuck's..... not if you
wanna get any sleep. The man snores worse than anyone I know :-).
