Refreshments are on me... searching with Google for info on removing
the tour pack on my Ultra I found this site:
http://linuxworx.org/HD/UltraDetach3.htm
There's another site I found last year and can't find now where
they replace the tour pack with a small chrome luggage rack, and this
is what I want to do. Anyone know of a site like this?
I also found a note in a blog somewhere that the on-board computer will
lock the ignition if it detects a break in the wiring to the tour pack.
Is this true, and if so is there a workaround?
TIA for any help,

A few screws on the bottom (inside) of the tour pack, unhook the
electrical and the antenna. It's a 10 minute job.
When you are done, take a very close look at the mounting bracket
where the screws mount. The vintage you are riding had a badly
designed bracket that eventually cracks near the screws and breaks,
leaving your tour pack attached only to the license plate.
The replacement part isn't that expensive and it's easy to install.
I did it in a parking lot in Bennington Vermont.

Unless you have a CD changer (I don't) or maybe a 100 watt amp for
the back speakers (I do) in your tour pak . Makes it a 12 minute job .
My mount has broken and been welded (poorly) back together . Puts the
lower part of the bracket in a bind . I might replace it when I paint it
. Might not , it's still holding the tour pak where it belongs .
I have no idea about the onboard computer thing , my bike doesn't
have one . None of my bikes do ...

How does the amp work with the overall sound of the system? It's just for
the rear speakers?

It's rated like Sears compressors ... might surge 100 watts , but RMS
output is likely closer to 20 per channel or so . I have it wired to the
wiring for the rear speakers , that usually goes to the CB control pod ,
which was fried . The stock signal level is very low , probably part of
the reason it's not real loud . It's hooked only to the rear speakers ,
and while it's not real noticeable , I can tell if it's on or off . More
of a "fill" volume , I guess you'd say . I have considered adding a
signal conditioner amp to bring the level up ... but if I make any major
changes it will be to a 4 channel marine CD type unit . My understanding
is that almost any remote capable stereo can be used with an appropriate
wiring adapter .
