I'm brand new to this group.  My name is Lee, Cracker, when I'm on the road,
and I live in Davie Florida.  I'm a long way from being new to motorcycles,
but I'm real new at owning a Harley.  The last couple of months my '09 Dyna
Low Rider and I have been getting to know one another.  That's easy to do in
south Florida as long as you don't mine getting rained on pretty much every
day during the summer.  After 2500 miles, I'm ready to expand my range a
bit.

A friend is trailering his Road King down next week and we're headed down
for a few days in Key West.  The wives will take either his Suburban or my
Durango down.  We'll ride the bikes.  We're starting out in Davie, just SW
of Ft. Lauderdale.  We already plan to take in Everglades City, Chokoloskee
and the Clyde Butcher Gallery (Near the Oasis Ranger Station in Big Cypress,
free, and well worth a stop).  That will pretty much double the distance and
the time if we don't do them as a pre-departure day trip.

Other than that, we'll make the mandatory stop for a beer at Alabama Jacks,
along the side of the Card Sound Road and we may stop for a blackened group
sandwich from Strickland's, in Marathon.  We will stop for something cold
and wet from the No Name Pub, around Cudjoe Key.  On the way back up, we'll
almost certainly visit the Stuffed Pig, in Marathon, for breakfast.

That covers everything we, mostly I, know to do and see.  There just has to
be more between Ft. Lauderdale and Key West.  If you've made the trip and
know places, or have been told about places or things to do, I'd love to
hear about it.

Everyone in here was new at one point or another.

You're lucky. I live in Kansas...a nice place to live, but I wouldn't
want to visit there.

Plenty of IRLs this summer. (You'll figure out what IRL stands for.)
Find one near you - or far from you if ya want - and just show up. Good
way to put some miles on the bike and to meet some folks. You'll find
that unlike most newsgroups, we actually get together in person on a
regular basis. We drink beer together, tell lies to each other, ride
together, help each other out when we can, etc.

Trailering? I've *heard* that people actually put their bikes on
trailers and pull them around. Interesting concept.

Beer is good.

Speaking of beer, I'll buy a round for ya.

Not too bad for a new guy! If you haven't already read what is in the
following link, you might wanna do so...good reading and it'll make your
stay here much more enjoyable.

There's no such thing as too much money.

Some of us also have to keep a wife happy if we're to continue to do what we
love to do.  Not all wives want to ride everyplace they want to go.  I tried
to buy my wife a bike of her own, but she would have no part of it.  I'll be
lucky to get her to ride with me.  The new seat for my Dyna, the one
purchased because it was more comfortable for her, is in the shop having my
half cut down so that I can get my feet flat on the ground.  My wife will
probably make some trips with me, but I'm not fooling myself into thinking
she'll do it often unless she changes her mind about having a bike of her
own.  My friend's wife has such poor balance that she can't ride a bicycle,
let alone a motorcycle, and has no interest in riding, with him or
otherwise.  That's just as well.  Somebody has to look after his kids and
dogs while he's off riding.

Beyond that, a trailer, or other way to transport a bike, sure comes in
handy when the bike needs to spend time in the shop and will also let me
start a ride someplace I haven't worn out one or more sets of tires riding
before.  My income production sometimes still requires my presence at a
specific time and place and I'm more than 300 miles from the state line to
the north and more than 700 miles from the state border to the west.  It
takes a lot of time for me to get to someplace I haven't spent the last 60
years getting to know.

On the other hand, longer rides to places I'm interest in going aren't going
to be a problem.  The Keys trip, including planned side trips, will be
somewhere around  500 miles, round trip and I'm already planning a trip to
Biketoberfest in Daytona and to St. Augustine for the Florida HOG Rally the
next week, about 650 miles without any side trips, and you know there will
be side trips.

Last year, I bought a long bed pickup to transport my ATV without resorting
to a trailer.  It's maiden voyage was to visit some friends in BFE
Tennessee.  It worked as planned, but I still needed a trailer for the
wife's ATV.  As luck will have it, the new bike will fit in the truck, with
the tailgate closed, but the trailer's about 2 feet too short.  I'm already
looking at ramps and wheel chocks for the pickup, but I'll probably replace
the trailer first.  It will be a while, though, before I need either.
