Been a while since I felt the need to share a ride report. I haven't ridden
much since I got busted up back in 2002. I've made a couple trips to
Laughlin and one to Vegas, but those were just miserable hard rides out of
determination and a refusal to let fear stop me from doing something I used
to love to do. I was even without a motorcycle of my own for a short time
in 2003 or 2004. In 2006 I picked up a new Vulcan Meanie and tried to get
back into riding, but I have found myself drawn more into bass fishing since
2003. When I have a whole weekend free I tend to think of fishing
destinations and making sure my truck is full of diesel and my boat is
gassed up. Not riding routes.
Yesterday was different though. I had the urge to ride. An actual urge to
go for a ride. I'm not conditioned for long trips anymore, but still I
wanted to ride and with an old riding buddy who has helped me out a time or
two. He was there the night I put my VRSCA into a car. He's been bugging
me that we never ride anymore, so I called him up and asked him to lunch.
Yesterday he and I hopped on our bikes and headed for Ligurta for a
hamburger. We started out dodging around the construction on 5E by taking
County 14th all the way out to Araby road. I had discovered its completed
through to the new ASH highway multi lane construction the other day when I
was dodging the construction on 5E. Araby road south of 32nd Street (ASH
Highway) is basically a major divided highway now. A few little errands and
up onto I-8. We tagged a few construction patches on the way out over the
mountain, but nothing major. Ligurta was Ligurta. My burger was the
"special" for about $8 and it was a monster. The service was good and the
food was good.
You may have had the misfortune to have been caught in the traffic on the
west bound side going up the mountain or read about it in the paper. Sorry.
We could see that from Ligurta Station backed up as far as we could see, and
decided to take Dome Valley road upto 95 to get back into town. I heard
later traffic on the westbound side of the freeway was backed up from
Telegraph pass all the way to Roll at some points in the day.
Dome Valley Road is one of the more popular roads for local motorcyclists to
take when they just want to go for a ride. Its mostly right angle turns and
straights, but better than most of the straight roads in the Southwest. Not
as fun as California's S24 with its multiple sweepers, but still a nice ride
through the farm land in Dome Valley none the less. There was some farm
traffic as expected, but other than that we had the road to ourselves. The
only hazard was the usual dirt and mud tracked up onto the road by farm
equipment. An experienced rider automatically looks for that stuff and slows
down in advance or looks where he is going and picks a safe track to avoid
sliding out in a turn.
One word of warning. If you think to be clever and avoid the traffic on the
I-8 you better know the backroads and farm roads in the Wellton Mohawk
Valley. You can't get through on Old Highway 80. The bridge is out just just
East of Dome Valley Road on that first big wash.
Oh, yeah. Some Harley content. My buddy was riding his wife's Sportster
instead of the Goldwing he bought from me. I guess he didn't want to be
that much faster than my Meanie. LOL.

Cool! Hopefully, it won't be the last time.

That's a fine report Bob. Good to read. Maybe this ride will inspire the
next. Golf is like that. I hate golf. But once in awhile if I play, I hit
the ball perfectly. I don't know why or what I did since I suck at golf but
the ball does everything it's supposed to do and it looks like I know what
I'm doing. That one shot makes me feel like coming back soon and playing
again. However, with golf, since I suck at it, cooler heads prevail later
and I play rarely. Riding, on the other hand, I'm good at and love
passionately.
But I digress.

Funny, I have been thinking about grabbing my clubs and heading over to the
local executive par 3 for the first time in years. Porbably haven't played
since 2001 ecept to drive a couple golf balls into my neighbors field out
back.
