Things change..

Our second original plan had been to leave from Cherokee late
morning after one last round of shopping for those with the shopping gene,
swing back through Clayton, have a cheeseburger/strawberry blond/beer lunch
at the Bulldog Inn, mosey across North GA, riding the good roads we'd
missed, drop by Panhead City and end up at a mutual friend's place in North
Alabama. Thursday morning's weather report scotched that plan. Rain, and
plenty of it was headed our way, and I had no desire to get caught in the
mountains in a thunderstorm, so we packed quick like bunnies, and headed
south on 441. We were doing great, until we hit the fog, and then the
clouds. The difference between fog and clouds is fog is wet, and clouds are
cold, and wet, and thick. As in 100' visibility, if you are lucky. I was
lead dog, and I slowed way down, doing my best to go down safe.

Which is what happened, since I'm writing this down, 2 weeks after the fact.
Got to Franklin, had a pretty damned good Shoney's buffet breakfast, and
after one more NC turnaround, were on the main line for GA.

Went through Clayton in the sun, Tallulah Falls, which would be worth a
looksee. I'd guess. Second time I've been there, and both times I had no
time to look it over. Weather was holding, and getting warmer. Stopped for
gas, and a cold one in some little wide spot, and then again for somebody
with the "I gotta pee" gene. Just north of Commerce, we went past a
legendary hot dog place, called "Skins". Wasn't hungry, and nobody wanted to
check it out, so we kept on rolling. Ran into road construction, lots go big
stuff moving mass quantities of dirt, flaggers, even one in a neck tie and
white hat. Must have been behind if they had white hats directing traffic.
Saw a damned good "nearly a wreck" when this guy on a bike came up on a
flagger, the car behind him slammed on his breaks, tires squealed, and the 4
wheel drive pickup behind the guy who slammed on his brakes had to do a
"Dukes of Hazzard" pass in the grass, and up the embankment move. Saw it all
in my rear view, looked pretty exciting. I also was starting to see big,
puffy clouds in my rearview. Better pedal. And we did.

Athens, Eatonton, Milledgeville, which is full of neat old houses, and a big
historic district. Part of the "Antebellum Trail" and well worth a stop if
you're ever up that way, and like looking at old houses. Bad place to be
thirsty in, though. As is all that part of GA. Good Christians, I guess.
But, the convenience stores never said anything about us buying a cold one,
putting it in the brown paper bag, and drinking it outside. Maybe they just
don't care for bar stools in that part of the world. Whatever.

We got back to Dublin about 3 PM, and I'll admit, Buffalo's Bar and Grille
looked pretty good. And the beer was cold. Had a great waiter, damned guy
was telepathic, always showing up right on time. Guess he knew he had big
spenders. Too bad he went off duty, cause his replacement waitress was not
telepathic, just pathetic. Just pitiful. Pitiful. Slow on her feet and in
her mind. Never caught on to the fact we were serious, and I had to go get
her 3 times. No big tips for her. I did go look up the waiter, who was
having a sandwich before he left, and tipped him. We decided that Dublin,
the Super 8, and Ruby Tuesday's was as good as we were gonna do, and after
400 miles, it was all I wanted to do. Best priced room on the whole trip, no
the best room, but the best priced. It looked and felt good to me, that's
all I can say.

Ruby Tuesday's was just up the road, drinks were cold, and on happy hour
prices, the giant burger was excellent and we had a fine, final night on the
road, dinner. We were the center of attention, imagine that, but we, and the
waiter, were happy when we left. Can't ask for much more than that. Turned
in well before 10 PM, and slept like a log.

One more installment.
