I bought this tool for cutting drywall and it works fine. I agree with an
earlier reviewer that it is hard to cut a straight line. It can get squirrelly
if you push too hard. For drywall I would use a wood cutting bit. The blunt
end drywall bits bog down lateral movement especially if you have to stay off a
stud underneath. It is essential that you get the vacuum attachment. If not
you will have dust everywhere, and you won't be able to see your cutting line.
The vacuum attachment also gives you an extra handhold for stability.
I bought this locally when installing a trash compactor into existing cabinets
in place of a jig saw. I usually buy DeWalt, but the store clerk seemed
knowledgeable and recommended this unit. I bought it with extra SZ05 Sabrecut
wood bits. Very good power, no complaints about the grip. Sort of like a
Dremel on steroids. I had problems controlling it making long straight line
cuts and eventually used my Sawzall to clean them up. I also had problems
making small curved cuts (half inch wide, quarter inch high) in wood. This will
probably be less of a problem with practice. Cutting through about 1/2" oak is
probably near the limits of RZ05 capabilities. The same size particle board
presented no problems. Wrenchless bit change is good, but...when starting a
cut at an angle, as recommended in the manual, it's really easy to angle the
plastic bit grip into the work surface, at which point the red bit grip melts
and spatters plastic all over the work surface. Very quickly, I might add.
This needs some re-design IMHO. Gravity will pull out the bit on vertical cuts
(i.e. bit at bottom) until one learns how tight to make the chuck. In some
cases, and I haven't figured out why yet, the chuck unthreads from the threaded
drive shaft when trying to loosen it with no bit in place. This was noted in
another review. Case is good, but it seems large for the RZ05 by itself. I
guess if one buys the full complement of accessories, it will be needed. It
comes with a good little accessory bit holder, but packages of extra bits don't
fit, only the bits themselves. This makes it difficult to separate new bits by
type. My recommendations: 1. If you are a professional, this thing will
probably live up to the Rotozip reputation. 2. If you are a weekend
do-it-yourselfer, I think the RZ05 has limitations for the casual user. I
strongly advise practice cuts with this unit before doing any serious work with
it. 3. Use two hands! It can kick back, and nicked my finger when I was using
it one-handed. Gloves probably will not help in this situation. Eye protection
is, as always, important. I'm probably guilty of using my Dremel habits with
this, and the RZ05 is a much more serious package. Ear protection is a must. (I
use Howard Leight 33dB foamies.)
4. I think I'm going to buy the ROTOZIP
Straight Edge Guide Model SEG1 to help with the straight cuts and the RotoZip
RZVAC1 Dust Extraction Adapter Kit. This generates a lot of dust. Search
Amazon for them. Would I buy it again? Yes, but the reconditioned units from
Amazon are probably better for the do-it-yourselfer. It's hard to say, since
everyone's experience varies.
Like many reviewers of prior RotoZip spiral saws, mine was a complete failure
nearly right out of the box. The fan began to make a horrendous noise, and the
interference had a very noticeable affect on the RPM. Before long, the spindle
lock completely fell apart. In order to finish my small drywall job, I had to
insert a dull bit into the spidle lock hole to change bits. The button
completely fell off the unit. I understand that this tool is apparently
redesigned to address these glaring flaws, but I absolutely would not buy one
until the reviews turn positive. I opted to bypass the warranty process, and
instead just throw this trash out. I've since purchased a Makita and so far so
good. Just to be clear, I did not buy this exact model, but rather a prior saw,
and although this model may be perfect, my goal with this review is to advise
you to wait until the fixes are proven.
Great tool for the money. I use it with 1/4 Router bits. I looked at the
dewalt and this one, and chose this one because it came with the case. When
using the zip bits it is hard to keep a perfect straight line but this is said
of any rotary tool no matter what brand. I bought it manly as a trim router but
also will use it as cutout tool
