Shirley, set 'em up for those taking the time to read this thread....

I'll be in New Orleans the week of 3/22-3/26, and my route/schedule on
the way down on the Street Glide is fixed by circumstances and the
folks I'm traveling with.  However, leaving on Friday afternoon, I
have Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday to wind my way back to the
D.C. area.   I do *not* want to spend much (if any) time on I59, I40,
or I81 on the way back, if I can avoid it.

Anyone familiar with some or all of that trip who might suggest
interesting side roads, stops, (bbq joints and covered bridges being
among my favorite places to stop) etc?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Sorry to reply to my own question, but thought of some more
information.  I don't really want to ride the BRP or Skyline Drive as
I have ridden both dozens of times over the year.   Looks like  U.S.
11 seems to be the national road that the aforementioned Interstates
replaced.   I'm familiar with it as it parallels and hops back and
forth across I-81 through Virginia, does anyone know how rideable it
is further south?   Thanks again,

Tim

P.S. Plastic is still on the bar....

Tim M sed:

It's ONLY good for bypassing I-81 if there's a traffic jam on I-81.
Too many towns, too slow speeds (lots of 45mph), not really an options
IMHO.

There's a lot of really great non-interstate roads in Virginal, but only
for putting around.  About the only get-out-of-town state roads are 15
south into Raleigh, NC... and 301 south on the Eastern Side.

GA/SC/AL... any 2 lane will get you pretty much 70mph and down the road.

Consider US-98 to near Tallahassee, your own route to north
Georgia, & the BRP/Skyline Drive to near the D.C. area.  Around 1500
miles, so it averages out to about 375 a day..........

Scenic Drive

There are several overlooks along the 11-mile scenic drive (AL Highway
176). There is no charge to tour this area. The road is paved with
winding curves and hills. Very little walking is needed to enjoy the
views from the overlooks. Picnic tables are available at most of the
overlooks. Restrooms are located at Little River Falls, Eberhart Point
and the Canyon Mouth Picnic Area. Click here for a map.
