After reading how much fun you're having down there
in New Scotland I started thinking about getting one myself.
There is a local dealer here in Vancouver, Shail's
Motorcycles ( http://shailsmotorcycles.com/ ) and they
want about CDN$11k for the base model.
Doing a bit of homework I found this site:
http://ural.wikispaces.com/
...and this video of flying the chair, which
I'm not in a particular hurry to try:
http://ural.wikispaces.com/Flying+the+Chair
Well $11k is around the price of a new Sportster
which I've also been considering. Decisions, Decisions.

I can't tell you to buy a Ural (that should probably be "an Ural", but for
some reason I just can't say "an Ural", it always comes out as "a Ural"),
but I can suggest you go test ride one. My dealer was more than willing to
let me take one for a little spin around the property just to see how it
fit. In fact the first time he was there he was insisting on it, but I
didn't want to wait around while he wheeled it out of the showroom at that
time. The first right hand turn will scare the shit out of you if you've
got any amount of speed. I won't buy one without the 2WD option, and the
base model may not have this. If you want to enjoy all aspects of the bike
you'll need to take it off road, and when you do this you may find that you
could have reaslly used the 2WD option.
The bike requires attention. Maintenance intervals are short, but pretty
easy, and you should get a video from the dealer outling all of the
maintenance items. Flying the hack you're first time is scary, especially
since you likely didn't expect it, but it's amzing how high up you can
actually get it without it flipping. I'm not as good as the guys in the
video and I've never done it with someone in the hack, but given enough room
I can drive it on two wheels for as long as I want. You can get it up to a
point where it's balanced and then it doesn't take much effort to keep it
there. The trouble comes when going in reverse. I've heard of a few people
that flipped their rigs while going in reverse. Lately on the way home
there have been neighborhood kids playing street hockey. Everytime I round
that last bend towards the house they stop what they're doing and encourage
me to get the hack up. If there's not traffic I usually oblige.
For what it's worth, I have no regrets in my purchase, but I'm a very easy
going person and don't get frustrated very easily, even if I'm on the side
of the highway and it's taking me two hours to change a tire and get the
bike going again. <g>

I'll ask, but the dealer here told me that typically
his stock is sold out before it even arrives at the shop.
Strange, eh? Last year I had no trouble demoing
a 1200cc Sportster.
Thanks for the info,
