Been reading this group for a  couple of years. Lurking mostly. I know that
there is lots of experience  and some pretty slick mechanics on here so
hopefully someone can help. I have a 2007 FXDL with a problem in the
starting circuit. Sometimes when I press the starter button, nothing
happens. Several tries, turning everything off then back on will get it to
work. Other times, I have had it start without touching the start button.
Turn the key, flip the kill switch to on and it starts. When it does this,
the starter will not disengage until I shut it down or pull the relay. Other
times, it will act completely normal and then, while riding, the starter
will try to engage. The first time it happened while riding, I disconnected
the neutral switch (pulled the plug). No difference. Took it to the dealer.
Worked completely normal for them. Got it back, rode it (short trips) for a
couple of weeks then it started to do it again. Thinking that the relay was
screwed, I replaced that, No change. Took it to an indy shop and they
replaced the start switch. Seemed fine for about a week then it started the
"hit switch and nothing" thing again. Back at the shop right now. They
pulled the solenoid, no problem with it. The only other thing in the starter
circuit is the alarm (turn signal module) though I can't see how that could
cause it. Only other thing I could think of is a short in the wiring
harness. Hope that's not the case. Any thoughts on this would be greatly
appreciated.

              ^^^^^^^^^

There's the problem, or it could be in the switch.
Just sayin.

This thing's not reliable enough for long trips. The switch has been
replaced but thanks anyway.

I had the same problem it was water in the start switch. But I see you
changed it and it worked for a short time. I try not to spray controls with
water when I wash my bike.

I thought that at first myself. Bike was parked outside in the rain for
about three days before it started having problems.
