Shirley, a round on me.  The bike is 30 years old, but new to me.
First time changing the oil on the transmission.  Had trouble
getting the drain plug out.  Felt gummy, had bits of metal on it,
but they did not seem hard enough to be metal.  Maybe it was
stripped and then screwed in with something on the thread, JB weld?
Had more trouble getting it back in, much more.  Have it "glued"
in with rectorseal5 now.  Don't think I should be riding
it much.  It's my 83 FXWG.  Plug looks like 1/2-13.  Need to tap
it for a new larger one.  Any recommendations?  Any gotchas to
look out for.

Whatever else you do , if you retap with the trans on the bike be sure to
flush the trans well with a solvent (diesel is cheap ...) to be SURE you get
all the chips out . Aluminum isn't particularly abrasive , but you still
don't want that crap runnin' thru the gears and bearings - especially all
the needle bearings in the gears and on the shafts .
I'd pull the trans and yank the gearset myself ...

I like the diesel idea, should be cheaper and work better than
motor oil.  This morning I ordered a Colony tap and drain plug
kit in 9/16-18, 7502-2, from JPCycle.  Will try to have it in
next Saturday.

Coat the tap with grease before you tap , it'll catch most of the swarf .
When you rinse it out , let the solvent drain into a *clean* container then
filter it thru a coffee filter . Rinse until there's no more metallic
residue on the filter paper .

Use a shop vac exhaust hooked to the fill tube to blow out the chips while
tapping.
