Overall was a good ride.....any ride is a good ride, but....
Started out bad...... I went to the meet up spot and waited for Brian, almost 15
minutes after he was suppose to be there I opened my tourpak and checked my
phone....yep, had a voicemail from Brian. His drivebelt had broken on the way to
meet me.......he was working on getting his bike home so he could get the belt
replaced.
I went out to the spot where I was suppose to meet Quin and the others.....I'd
told them "the gas station at Grand and Bell", I didn't see a gas station when I
got there so just went up the road a mile or so the the next gas station I saw,
called Quin and left a message. He got it, got back to me and we "hooked up".
We made another stop out in Wickenburg for a few minutes to stand in the shade,
BS a bit, and one guy had a smoke.......saw another small group of riders pass,
we exchanged "waves".......
Going through Wickenburg was a clusterfuck, the whole town is under
construction. But....when it's done it'll be frikkin great, they're just about
done with a couple roundabouts and are bypassing towntown (if you're not
interested in going through the middle of downtown to experience their ONLY
traffic light at the corner of US60 and US93).....
We headed up US93, it was starting to get warm, there was an extreme heat
advisory here today, hit 112. At the junction of US93 and SR89 there were a
couple DPS cars with the troopers out and on the shoulder, we slowed and
exchanged waves. Seven or eight miles up the road we started climbing Yarnell
hill......I jumped out front, I love doing the hill kinda quick and figured all
the troopers were at the bottom, so no tickets today.
About 2/3 up the hill there was a flagman (sign said SLOW), road had orange
cones.....we came around the next corner and the were several more DPS cruisers,
troopers out....an ambulance, bikes (saw one leaning against the guard rail). It
was the guys we'd waved at down in Wickenburg.
We got to the top of the hill to the cafe, some had lunch, some had breakfast (I
can attest that the tacos were very good. Quin asked me if I noticed down the
hill that there were three bikes and only two riders......I hadn't.
As we were finishing our meal, the two guys we'd seen by the ambulance came into
the cafe, got a table....one of the older gals who worked there talked to one of
them for a minute and gave him a hug. Both the guys seemed a little shaken up.
As we were leaving I asked one of them what had happened.
They said they didn't know exactly. They had a new guy riding with him that
they'd only met once before...he was a new rider on a 750 Honda Shadow. He came
up the hill pretty slowly, they ran up the hill and waited for him at the top.
He never showed up so they went back down....then one had to run back up the
hill to the cafe to call 911. Troopers told them the guy had gone wide in a
curve and hit the guard rail.....killed him.
Damn.....I lost two guys I knew on that hill last year (idiots were racing
crotch rockets)......
Quin and the other folks decided to ride up through Prescott and across the
Verde Valley. I'd told my wife I'd be home semi-early so went back the way I'd
come. I frikkin love riding the high desert, the mountains and open space trip
my trigger.
As hot as it was today, I thought I was loading up with plenty of fluids. I'd
had one bottle of water on the way from the house to the base of the hill, a BIG
glass of ice water and a rootbeer with my lunch, another bottle of water on the
way back through Wickenburg.....
And it still got away from me.......coming across SR74 I started feeling a
little woozy and I knew what it was, I was over heating badly. Got about 10
miles out from I-17 and cut south to go the back way into town....spotted a
medical plaza and ducked into their covered parking for some shade. I had 4
bottles of water on ice in the saddlebag. Got two of them down before I started
feeling better. Got home OK, downed 2 more bottles of water and hit the couch. I
was asleep in about 2 seconds........an hour later and I was up feeling fine (I
think).
Sure hope things start cooling off before the PBR Tour gets underway.....
Ain't no such thing as global warming.......

yeah, we cruised ~ 60mph ~ through peeples valley and through the
twisties going into the back end of Prescott. Stopped at the town
square, had some drinks at the hotel bistro then walked the square
with the other touristas window shopping/SYT watching.
From there we went out highway 89 through the Boulders (awesome as
usual) and headed past the backside of Prescott Valley to Mingus
Mountain.
Up and over ~ they're resurfacing the road so the 110º/15mph corners
were a bit slick with loose crap.
Coming into Jerome we parked across from the Spirit Room and climbed
the stairs to the haunted burger for ... a burger, and fish-n-chips,
and Cajun chicken and some wegan salady thing.
By the time we finished eating, chewing the fat, finishing off a
second pot of coffee (yep that was me) it was getting close to sundown
and time to head for home. Gas stop in Verde Valley @ 1900, hit the
highway with the cruise set at 80... 4 hours later I'm home and an
hour later I'm writing this thinking it's time to sleep.

Sometimes a ride can be described as a "fine and pleasant misery."

Oh shit. A waving thread.

Yeow! That's frickin' hot. It was 57 when I woke up at 7:00 AM this
morning. Supposed to heat all the way up to 80 by this afternoon.

That can't be a good sign.

More bad signs.

Shit. I knew bad news was coming.

You need one of those helmets that carry to cans of beverage on the
sides with a straw going to your mouth.

Not here in the plains states, anyway. I rode to MN a couple weeks ago.
Figured it was gonna be a typical hot summer ride, so I packed only
T-shirts. Had to buy a sweatshirt when I went through Nebraska! It got
quite cool in the mornings and evenings. Brrrrr.

Sorry I missed the ride. Belt broke as I was going up the hill to Rose
Garden. Getting home was a little exhausting pushing the bike up the hill
from I17 on ramp, but really glad we live in a flat neighborhood. Priced
the replacement belt, J&P wants $209, didn't even check the
boutique....anyone know of a better price on a gates drive belt.
