Greetings. Tabs on me, have a hot toddy. Or for those of you out here
in the Glorious Golden West, a tall cool one as it looks like another
brilliant and beyooteeful warm and sunny winter's day! (Sorry for the
rest of you)!
Long story short. Sunday my youngest granddaughter wanted to put on my
helmet and see if she could "hear the truckers" while parked in the
garage. I of course let her, as I let her do just about anything she
wants <G>. Anywho, I forgot to turn it off and lo and behold, the
bat's dead come Monday morn. I charged it up over night and took it to
work this morning. Now to my question: would a dead battery lead to a
malfunction of the turn signal's mercury switches? I noticed this
morning on the way in that they did not turn off after straightening
out from a turn, as they always have in the past. Right up until last
Firday, to be precise. Everything else works fine.
It's 2006 FLHTCUI, by the way.
Any hints or advice (other than to not leave the damn radio on all
night)? THANKS!

I asked about this at the dealer, and here's what the salesman told me:
The turn-signal auto-turner-offer is actually part of the battery, and
he says the sensors are pretty high up towards the top of the battery
where they're most effective. But when the battery goes dead the level
of the voltage inside the battery drops below where the sensors are
located. You need to charge the battery some more using one of their
trickle chargers (only $59.95) or you need to have their service
department remove the cap of the sealed battery (you can't do this at
home) and pour enough voltage in to raise the level back up. And that
also explains why the price of batteries has gone up so much lately.
At least that's what he said.
Ok, not really, but I'm bored and thought I should offer some
explanation as I was drinking on your tab.

You, you bastid you! Pretty funny, Fins, and you had me going. It was
not at all an inconceivable thing to hear from a dealer. 'Least 'round
these parts.

That's a pretty good explanation, but everybody knows that you should
also fill the battery with smoke when servicing it. How else would you
know if your wiring harness has any leaks.
