A Greenville motorcyclist and another biker died Saturday when a pickup
truck struck a group of motorcyclists traveling one mile north of Goldsboro,
according to a preliminary report from the State Highway Patrol.

The accident that killed Charles Thurman Poe Jr., 59, of Tanglewood Drive,
Greenville, and Lenwood W. Whitley, 57, of Chocowinity, happened shortly
before 2 p.m. Saturday.

Five other people also were injured, but their names were unavailable Sunday
afternoon, according to a highway patrol communications dispatcher in
Raleigh.

Poe was the co-owner and operator of Village Pawn and Coastal Pawn and a
retired member of Frog Level Motorcycle Club.

According to the initial report, the pickup truck was traveling north when
it crossed the highway center line and struck four motorcycles traveling
south head-on. The pickup truck, three motorcycles and the riders ended up
in a ditch while a fourth motorcycle and its rider ended up on the shoulder
of the road.

Poe's family has scheduled a visitation from 7-9 p.m. today at Wilkerson
Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday in the
funeral home's chapel.

Information about Whitley's funeral arrangements was unavailable.

Two men on motorcycles were killed Saturday afternoon on U.S. 13 North when
they were struck head-on by a pickup truck.

Charles Poe, 59, of Greenville, and Lenwood Whitley, 57, of Chocowinity,
were part of a group of motorcyclists headed south near Hood Swamp Road when
a pickup driven by Billy Joe Fowler, 32, of Goldsboro, crossed the center
line and hit them about 2 p.m., according to investigators with the state
Highway Patrol.

Three other people were injured, at least one seriously, said Trooper A.R.
Fowler, who is not related to the driver of the pickup.

Billy Joe Fowler was charged with two counts of felony death by motor
vehicle, one county of inflicting serious injury by motor vehicle, driving
while impaired and reckless driving, the trooper said.

Fowler, who was the only person in the white Ford pickup at the time of the
accident, was being held Saturday night in the Wayne County Jail under
$100,000 bond.

The names of the injured and their conditions were not known at presstime.

The Pinewood and New Hope volunteer fire departments and Wayne County
Emergency Services responded to the call.

it only takes a split of a second............

I came close myself once, and a few friends I have known over the
years are gone from similar situations.
