I'll buy this round.
Thanks to all them what responded to my cam chain thread. The noise
turned out to be something other.
Putting the stethoscope on the bike, the only noisy area was the
primary. It had been a long time since I had adjusted the chain. I'd
changed the oil in there five or six thou ago but at the time, the
chain was fine. When I opened up the inspection plate, it had well
over an inch of play in it, so I adjusted it up, hoping that would fix
the new noise that I've been hearing. It didn't.
Monday, riding home from work, I started pressing on the fairing as I
went down the road. Nothing. Then I pressed over on the right hand
side and the noise changed just a little. Hmmm... I got the bike to
the rpm where the noise is most pronounced and with my left hand,
reached over and pressed the front and inner fairing together, just to
the right of the windshield. The freakin' noise disappeared.
So what I've been hearing is either due to the gasket not seating
correctly when I last had the front off (which is what I expect, as I
had it off just prior to my trip to CA, when I first heard the noise),
or perhaps a broken mount. Either way, it's better news than
something heading south in the engine.
I feel a bit like a putz, however, I can live with that. It still
sounds like an engine noise to me, but at least now I know it's not.
And as a result, the bike is shifting a little better now that the
primary chain has been adjusted correctly.

They've recently revised the part numbers to a -96B for both sides, I had to
order a pair for my brother a few weeks ago. The new units have a little
extra metal near the top where the bend for the upper mounting hole is,
looks like it will fix the problem or move it somewhere else.

Toward the end of my cam chain/pushrod adventure I had it all buttoned up,
started it and
heard a new horrible sound. Thought I was going to cry. Turned out to be the
shoplight.
I understand better now why all the real mechanics are grey.
