Shirley, set up the folks with what they'd like, and gimme a whiskey
sour, please.
So, what's the deal with helmets? A couple of the guys at work started
teasing me because I 'admited' that I intend to wear a helmet when I
start riding (I work in Kansas, and they don't require them here).
What's everyone have against helmets? Is it a fashion thing? Given
that the most common advise I've got since I said I was going to start
riding is that I should be prepared to lay down my bike at some point,
it seems odd that so many of those who tell me that also choose not to
protect their domes.
By the way - I'm taking your collective advise and starting out with an
'83 Virago (500) to learn on. I think it's a pretty good looking bike,
and a buddy of mine has one that he rides regularly and is willing to
sell for $800 (He's got an '05 Hayabusa, so he's losing interest in the
Virago). I plan to ride the 500 for a year or so, and then get my
Harley -- and since I won't have to learn on the Harley, I now intend
to forgo the Sportster and get what I really want: A Springer.

Helmet threads have been beaten to death in here. You can google it or you
can do what you think is best and screw everyone else. Personally, I wear
one because it's the law, if it wasn't I'd likely still wear one. Then
there'd be the one day that I figure I'm just running to the corner store
and since it's not the law I may as well not bother getting it and putting
it on, that's when I'd get hit from behind at a stop sign and end up with a
hood ornamet sticking out of the back of my head.

Good on ya and congrats on the new bike, most would have bought the
Sportster because of some foolish notion of not wanting to be seen on a jap
bike, even though they're just learning to ride.

Pretty near perzactly what happened to me in Daytona. Started the morning
wearing it. Stopped for breakfast whilst riding south on A1A, It was such
a glorious day, I decided to bungy it to the back. An hour later my head
was leaving a sizeable blood stain on John Davidson Hwy ...
In my mind, helmets ought to be optional, and I'll opt to wear one.
