Coffee on me....there is a little something to go with it for those who
wish.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a new '09.
There is a nice Ultra in the showroom (Red Sunglo/Smoky Gold) that I
like. The problem is that it is heavy, has security (PITA) and no ABS
plus the two tone paint is expensive.

There is also a Vivid Black Road Glide as well which, by the time I load
it up with stuff to make it equivalent, would be a couple thou cheaper,
still with security and no ABS.

I have never had the chance to ride a Road Glide although many people
love it. Many people also hate it.

My Ultra has a little over 50,000 miles (80,000 km) and is likely to
start needing a fair bit of work. I'm also starting to get tired of the
chase for power, shitty gas mileage and things falling off or breaking
down.
The new bikes are enough better that I think it's time. Recent reports
from the few who have made the jump are encouraging.

I doubt I would get much, if any, deal on the bike sale although I do get
P&A and labour at a good price.

If I do this I will be getting the 7 year warranty and probably doing no
more than a stage 1 (okay, maybe a 103" stage 2) to keep within the
warranty.

My questions are:
Does anyone have experience of the Road Glide vs the Ultra as far as
comfort, handling and overall riding experience? I would be adding a
Sundowner seat to the RG for touring as well as a tourpak and various
other necessities.

Has anyone gone from stock to stage 1 to 103" stage 2? How much
difference did it make for power, gas mileage etc?

Thanks....bottomless pot and Shirley will keep the flavouring coming.

I've ridden other peoples Eglides, but never owned one.  I do own a Road
Glide, '07 vintage.  I prefer the fixed fairing on the Road Glide, but other
than that there ain't a lot of difference.  I've had ABS, & they're nice but not
necessary.  The security system on the new Harleys is not a problem, & in fact
makes the bike easier to deal with.  Add the little plug-in siren & you've got
your security handled.  Just keep the key fob with your key.  You can use the
key, or not, but the bike will be disabled when you walk away, & ready to ride
when you walk up.  No locks, chains, etc.

Extended warranties are seldom worth their cost & most will void
themselves for the most innocent of changes in the motorcycle.  If you must get
an extended warranty, read it thoroughly & be sure you can live with the
limitations it'll place on you & your ride.

Not to the current 103" motor, but I have stroked a Harley.  Power is
*always* fun, but only you will know how much you want.  Whichever you get, ride
it a while & see if you need/want more.  The 96" is pretty nice if you're going
to ride it as a touring machine.

Jinks sed:

What he said.

What he said, '08.

What he said... with the addition, I like the glove boxes,
and proximity of the fairing... further out.

I love the ABS.  Used it in a turn this trip to the cabin.
The transition from I-81 South to I-26 East in TN is a TIGHT right hand
declining radius.  I came into it way to hot (ok, maybe not WAY to hot,
but really fast, and I wanted to try out the ABS... so I slammed on the
rear, stayed off the front and leaned, without using counter
steering)... Guess what, it worked like a charm... and Harley sez not to
use them in a turn. (Legal reasons, I'm sure).

I've got insurance... alarms are too much trouble.

Mine is stock 96" and I'm getting almost 45mpg.  233 miles, 5.2 gals,
80mph... on cruise control.
But most of that was on I-81 South... so that's mostly downhill, right?

I've been toying with getting some kind of 2 into 1 pipes (looking at
Samson Calibers), but I think I'll keep it the way it is.  I like the
quiet, there's enough power in the 96" (I'm not drag racing anyone).

<for Jinks>... I'm probably going to go ahead and get the Samson pipes
for Rodney.
Unless we can get over to Miller's and maybe listen to some being added
to other people's bikes...

<schnippe>

I was plannin' on listenen' to 'em on Rudy when you got here!  'Course I
was also plannin' on compairin' 'em to Casper's D&D Quiets, but since he ain't
comin' & you still got a choke hold on your cash I guess I'll have to look
(listen) elsewhere.  I'm headed out-about-town in a few minutes on just such a
quest.  We can repeat it Friday if you want.
Oh yeah, in the web photos I like the look of the Sampsons a little
better.  Hope you're right about the sound!

Just had a thought!  Maybe I should put a sign in front of the house....

                                   "SAMPSON AND D & D 2 to 1 PIPES!
                                          "PULL IN FOR FREE BEER"

We'd probably hear more that way.................
