i have a 1990 softail and the engine breather is constantly getting
full of oily white gunk. is this a symptom of some other problem or is
there anything i can do about it.

You need to ride more and pose less . That white gunk is condensation inside
your motor because it's not getting hot enough to evaporate . Take it for a
50 mile blast down the freeway and check it , bet it's not white anymore .

What kind of riding are you doing? A lot of short hauls won't give the
engine time to heat up enough to evaoprate any moisture that builds up.
Water in the oil turns it a milky color. Starting by googling the group for
oil and milky.

you could be right about the short hops. i do 12 miles to work every
day through city traffic. i warm up the bike for 5 mins. before i
leave until the rocket covers are warm to the touch but i guess this
is not enough.

Too many short hops'll do that. Try runnin it long enuff to get the
condensation cooked outa the oil, like a good extended freeway run.
