has anyone seen a defective rear tire after a blowout?

Shirley, put a round on the table for everyone to enjoy, ..

I'm a long time 'lurker' that has always enjoyed the discussions here. I
even went as far as attending MITM in IL a couple of times, years ago.
Whenever I am searching for an answer or good advise, I turn to RMH
first. ..Ok, with those 'lies' out the way, LOL I'll ask my question.

This past weekend I was riding with some friends from a few states away
in the beautiful mountains of Colorado (has anyone ridden Hwy 550 from
Durango to Ouray?). After a short stop at Ridgeway, CO, we were riding
past Telluride towards Cortez, CO on Hwy 145, when about a mile from
Rico, CO, apparently my friends rear tire blew. He tried to maintain
control but couldn't, and went down. I was riding in front, I heard a
noise, and I thought something broken on my bike, so was looking in the
rear-view mirror to see his crash.

TO make a long story shorter, both he and his wife are ok, and
recovering in separate hospitals (both were air lifted from the crash
site, one to Durango and the other to Farmington, NM).

We'd been riding the mountain Hwys for about 3 hours and his handling
was excellent, so I really don't suspect an under-inflated tire. At the
crash site, I looked his bike's (a 1998 Electra glide) rear tire. At
first glance, it appeared to have NO bottom side tread at all, just
inner steel belt wear showing. He said the Pirelli has approximately
4000 miles on it.

OK Shirley set up another round, ... I'm wondering if anyone has heard
of a tire's entire tread section ripping off?

As a side note; I went to my mechanic to check my tires yesterday, he
said that I had several thousand miles left on the rear tire, but at
15,000+ (Dunlap Elite 3) miles, I said to order me a new one.

btw, I've been reading articles at http://www.unsafemotorcycles.com/ ,
but there is little mention of Pirelli tires?

Thanks for the coffee. If you're still buyin' later, I'll take a
Maker's Mark on the rocks.

Driven, not ridden, on the way from Durango to Telluride Bluegrass
Festival a coupla summers ago. In fact, I even tried to take a short
cut and drive the Purgatory Road in a Suburban with eight folks total
on board. Had to turn back because of snow. The switchbacks and
streams I had to drive over nearly gave me a heart attack. We'll be
talking about that detour 'til I'm in the nursing home. Garmin and
Mapquest both be damned for suggesting that route over the long way
'round like we ended up taking!

Good. I'll save mine for the MM later.

Not me, but I'm enjoyin' the conversation and the free drinks, so I'm
stickin' around for a while!

Same here. I had my 15K maintenance done last week, and mechanic said
I had 3/32". They replaced it anyway. And, since I'm getting fine
mileage out of the Dunlops, I told him to put the same thing on. It
ain't broke, so I'm not gonna fix it with something "better."

Tread separation almost always indicates under inflation or over loaded.

Good or OK handling is never a way of judging a tires inflation.
