I was told by my local harley dealer not to use a car battery to jump start
my mates harley as this would damage the regulator, is there really any
truth in his comment?

I'm gonna go ahead and talk out my ass based on my having just enough
electrical theory to be dangerous.
12Volts is 12Volts. What you don't want, is the car's alternator putting out
charge current, so shut it down. (Well, that and dont wire it up backward.)
The mc starter/electrics will only draw the amps it needs to fire up.

: The reason I even replied to this post is that last week my dad bought
: a new Sporty. The sales gomer was telling him some do's and don't's,
: boosting was on the list. But it was listed about the same time they
: told him about service, and that if he did his own service and used
: HD oil only it "probably" wouldn't void the warranty. And I used
: to really like and respect this dealer.
Oh really. Did they actually say he has to use HD oil? According to
federal law, they have to give him the oil then.
I think they were blowing smoke, and need to be called out on it.

Well, when they broke out with that line I snorted and left the room
mumbling about the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act. I doubt they
impressed my dad much either since he ran an auto parts store for
20+ years. Stuff like that gets my goat. But I hear it from folks I
work with on a regular basis with references to any auto or mc brand
you care to list.

I'm thinking it's a possibility. He had some eye surgery and says he can
see well enough to ride now. He had been looking at Dynas cause he
didn't want to get back on one of them heavy ass baggers.<g> He's now
the proud owner of a '08 1200 Sporty Custom. Maybe I can talk him into
making some of the Mid-South IRL's.
