Plastic's on the bar folks, I'll have a soda, i'm using company time
here.
I've been scouting out mid 90's HD's this past week with my mind
pretty well set on a used softail of some sort (never had one, look
spiffy and lots of parts available). Low and behold, local dealer has
a '95 FXDS convertable with only 8000 miles and my practical side is
starting to tingle. I had a '91 FXR for about seven years and although
she was all shiny when I was done bolting shit on her, I thought it
was a mistake changing her original configuration because the wide
glide trees (and narrow 21" laced wheel) compromised the handling, I
broke a couple spokes on the laced wheels that turned out to be a
hassle twice (western NY pot-holes!) and honestly, the fancy paint
didn't look as good as the stock blue. This '95 is bone stock and for
$7k with tax, she seems like some good solid fun. I like the looks of
the mid nineties softail customs but I think the Mrs. and I may get
more lasting comfort out of the fxds. Any thoughts? How many of you
have owned one? Like it?, dislike it?
Going to get a closer look tonight. Thanks for any feedback in the
meantime.

 wallster axed:

Should be about 5K.
Unless yer looking specifically for an Evo, I've got a '99FXD with all
the convertible stuff for around 7K.
More mileage on it then the '95, but I've also got all the service
records...

Someday, I might even try to sell it.

They're asking $6595. and I'm assuming I can get it for $6200. It
doesn't sound out of line to me. The conv's had dual disc brakes,
tach, bags, and windshield (and the black and chrome engine package),
with only 8000 miles, it seems fair. I guess I'll have to check it out
good. Thanks Len.

I think that's a reasonable deal. But then what do I know, really? I paid
'bout that much for a stage II but otherwise bone stock'93 FXRS-C w/25k on
the clock in 2006. Private sale from someone I knew took good care of it.
Not to mention that nearly stock FXRs in pristine condition seem hard to
find.

Ultimately, to you it's worth whatever you're willing to pay, not what
someone else will pay. But, you gotta remember that when it comes time to
sell too. <sfsf>

Since the FXD is basically an FXR with a lighter frame I'll take a stab
at this one.
Yeah, a wide glide with a 21" laced is less than optimum.  You want to
try some custom try a mid-glide with a 19" alloy.  Had that front end on two
FXR's with *no* problems at all.  One I still have has the 35mm tubes & still
handles fine.  The mid-glide solves the space/appearence problem of the narrow
glide without compromising handling.
Other than that, the FX is my favorite up to full size baggers.  When
you get to them the comfort & natural enhancement that comes with 'em tend to
spoil you.
