Gentlemen:

Okay, I'll post pictures of my new (old) bike soon.  I'm waiting because
several bits are off it right now and so before I do:

I bought some replacement parts for some worn out bits.  This included
buying a new throttle cable and cable adjuster.  The latter is a small
hollow screw-like thing which screws into the carburetor.

Now, on Amal carbs (the 600/900 series concentrics) the process seems to
work this way:  First, snugly put the metal end of the throttle cable
housing into the cable adjuster.  Second, screw the cable adjuster into
the carburetor (after connecting the cable itself, of course).

The problem is that the metal end of the throttle cable housing is
ever-so-slightly too large for the cable adjuster.  The parts are correct.
The old cable adjuster which I'm replacing is cracked, I imagine it's
because the old throttle cable was jammed into it as I'm looking to jam
this new one in.

So am I (a) doing something completely wrong or (b) just in need of guts
and a hammer to get the throttle cable end stuck into the cable adjuster?
I get the impression it's supposed to fit snugly and hold there.

Many thanks in advance,
Justin

You may need a crimp tool to thin the cable end cap slightly, making sure it
doesn't bind the inner cable. It should be snug but not too tight to turn.

Sounds like pattern parts that aren't accurately enough made.
The metal ferrule can be removed from the cable, as it's mainly there to
pretty it up. Sharp side cutters should do it. With the cable end in the
adjuster, the lack of ferrule won't be obvious. Or, try opening up the
cable adjuster's hole. But that could be risky, and you'd lose
protective plating against rust.
