While I am trying to get a decent deal on a tank (see other posts)
after giving up on any attempt at salvaging the one it came with, I
want to see if this bike will start and run. Since I have no tank,my
thought is this: I take the little tank from my lawn mower and connect
it to the fuel line.
This brings the question of what I need to do about the smaller
(reserve?) line. Will it affect the ability to start/run? Is this a
reserve line? Any thoughts on the lawnmower tank being used?
Thanks again for all the help to date :)

Why not get a tool designed for the purpose?
http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/acc/motionpro/auxfueltank.gif is what
it looks like.
Although the Motion Pro one is $40.00, there are off-brands to be found
for around $12-$15.

As has already been pointed out the smaller hose is a vacuum line,
not a fuel line, just plug it.

If he's already got a suitable tank from a lawnmower, why on earth should
he buy a specialized motorcycle auxiliary tune-up tank just for this one
instance? Set the lawnmower tank on a workbench or toolchest next to
the bike and run a hose to it, job done.
