tires are good for? there's only 6000 miles on the bike i'm looking at.
thanks!

Worrying the price of a new tire versus the cost of buying a used motorcycle
that's only two or three years old doesn't make a lot of sense.
As long as you own a motorcycle, you're going to be replacing tires. I've had
tires that were so soft they barely lasted 3000 miles while giving excellent
traction and had tires so hard they lasted 15,000 miles and scared me because
they had such poor traction.
If you want a little harder tire, you might try a Metzeler 880.
Tire life depends a lot on whether the previous owner kept the tires inflated
to the
proper pressure and what kind of roads he travelled on. Concrete freeways are
hell on tires if you try to ride fast, asphalt backroads are gentler on tires
and hopefully you ride slower on two lane roads anyway.
After riding my 123 horsepower Yamaha sportbike in the mountains, I was
amazed that it got 8000 miles on the original equipment Dunlop rear tire. I
think it was a D205. The front tire only lasted about 2000 miles though and
it was shot.
If the rear tire on the Vulcan is a Dunlop D404, it only had 9/32 of an inch
of tread depth to start with, and you can measure the tread depth in the
center of the tire to see how much wear is left.
There will also be wear bars that stick up a little from the bottom of the
tread groove. If the tire is worn down to the wear bars the bike needs a new
tire.
Front D404's have 5/32's inch tread depth. But measuring the tread depth in
the center won't work. Front tires wear out on the sides, and front tires
start to scallop and cup and wear funny, so finding a place to measure tread
depth
is almost impossible.

He needs to use the throttle more.
