Posted by S. Garland on December 16, 2008, 10:47 pm Hubs and I thought about touring Europe next summer for two weeks. I know
the exchange rate doesn't favor the U.S traveler now.
We thought about boxing our riding gear up and shipping it to the rental
place in Europe rather than trying to do an airplane thing as we were
worried about them losing or delaying the shipment for packed-gear luggage.
I went to the UPS shipping site and they want $506 (cheapest rate too!) to
ship "one-way" to Europe! Seems very excessive to me and I don't know how
Customs play into this for some more money.
The return of our gear wasn't much better and about the same price. One
person's ticket is about $990 round trip so I don't know why our gear bag is
more than that round trip should we elect to send it ahead of us by UPS.
Anyone deal with the air carriers sending gear abroad? Are they reliable to
be there when you get there? UPS is out of the list for $1000 round-trip
for our gear. Gar bags aren't carry-ons due to their size.

My wife and I took our motorcycles to Europe for a month back in the
80s. We just wore our gear and carried the helmets onto the plane.
It's a thought.

$506 is darned near round-trip airfare.

$506 would be a half decent start on some new gear.
Nothing to be rented and/or bought over there ?

Well, it's better at the moment than it has been. Not that much, but a
little.

Let me guess, it's a big box and it doesn't weigh that much. Which means
you'll get stiffed by the courier companies for a lot of money.
Stuff it in a suitcase or similar and if necessary, pay the airline for
the additional bag if you end up taking two. Anything else adds more
scope for fuckups and costs a lot more money.
