Odinn, although he said he was looking for an early (75) GL1000. And he
lives roughly 500 miles away...
If that one has been taken care of it's not a bad deal. Having the tool
kit and owner's manual is a good sign.
I think a naked 1000 or 1100 in really nice shape would be a pretty
cool bike. I really liked my '86 GL1200A luxury liner but its appetite
for head gaskets put me off owning another 1200. The 1500s are just
overweight pigs. Either get a 1000 or an 1800 I say.

I've found a couple within 30 miles of me on ebay. Looking to see how
they play out if I can afford one of them this month. After being
employed only 7 months out of the last 15 months has left me a little
light in the pocket, so I'm waiting for a steal of a deal or until I can
afford one proper (next month).

I'm sure this will not be news to you, but I have found that the overall
cost of buying a used bike is cheaper when you buy one in decent condition
to start with. And I'm not talking about restoring them to concours or
showroom condition, just making them mechanically correct and dependable.
So my advice would be to keep saving until you can afford to snap up a
more or less OK bike that doesn't need a lot of parts replaced or overhauled.
Easier said than done, I know all too well.

I've only bought 3 new bikes in my life. I've bought everything from
well running used bikes to complete basket cases found under tarps in
boxes in someone back yard.
In '86, I paid $100 for a 1975 CB750F found this way. The engine was
seized from sitting and rusting up a bit. I poured tranny fluid in the
cylinders, let it set for a week, broke the pistons free, cleaned
everything up, shoved the engine and tranny into a semi-rigid frame for
a triumph that we modified for the 750, put drag pipes and a springer
front end on it. Engine never smoked or used any oil and was running
strong as ever when I sold it a couple years later.
One of my favorite bikes was a 1980 KZ1300 that I bought in '88 that had
thrown a rod right through the case. Paid $200 for it, replaced the
case and rebuilt the engine and rode the shit out of it for almost a
year before I ended up going head on with a car on it.
It's more than likely, any GL1000 I purchase will have less miles (and
probably require less work) than my current GeezerGlide to get it in
perfect condition. As for availability of parts, I've found everything
needed to build a GL1000 from the ground up including frames, engines,
gauges, etc.
