Rode the Monster about 200 miles today, enjoying the sunshine and the
record (or near record) setting warmth, as the thermometer topped 70
degrees fahrenheit here in the Washington, D.C. area.

Strangely enough, meteorologically speaking, the second week in January
is statistically the coldest week of the year on average. Here we are,
just a day or two away from that, and the house windows were open all
day, while the golf courses we passed were jammed with duffers in short
sleeves and sometimes even short pants.

The motorcyclists were out in droves; I actually got tired of waving to
all of them!

Rode west and then north to the little railroad town of Bruswick,
Maryland, then west again to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, up over the
mountains and back into Virginia and scenic Route 9, where we turned
west once again and rode up through Charles Town and Summit Point,
West Virginia, then back south to Purcellville, Virginia, where the two
groups we had split up into earlier in the day (I led the 'slow' group,
trying to keep my driver's license!) met at Al's Pizza for a late
afternoon lunch and debrief.

us headed back north, across the Potomac again, back to Brunswick and
the Brunswick Tavern, where we were welcomed by all even though we
appeared to be the only out of town patrons in the place, and where we
tipped back a couple of cold ones while reliving the best parts of our
ride.

At cruising speeds, the S4Rs got just over 45mpg, and it was a joy to
ride something that light and flickable after weeks of commuting and
touring on the Street Glide.

A lovely day for riding, and a lovely winter ride, through three
beautiful states, on smooth, well paved and lightly travelled (except
at the start and finish in congested northern Virginia) roads.

Tri-State and you left the states too... Isn't DC officially not in the
states?

D.C. is certainly in the United States, but is not in one of the
states. It is a federal district.

However, I never rode in D.C. yesterday; just in the D.C. area, which
as normally loosely described includes northern Virginia.

Yep. I realised my bad choice of wording to describe it...

Glad to hear you got out. I got a 20 mile ride in with the wife looking for
a new helmet for her...
