What surprised me is the claim that bone conduction of noise can damage
hearing. I wear earplugs myself, and they make quite a difference. Without
earplugs, if I go on the freeway for a while, when I get back, there is
temporary threshold shift:

But if I wear earplugs, there seem to be no effects.
All interesting and relevant ...

I can't imagine the noise through the bones would matter that much.
It gets way too loud without earplugs though. I grew up on a farm. No
tractor cabs in those days. There was plenty of exhaust noise.

There are bone-conduction headsets that work as well as the kind that go
in your ears.
If the measurements show that there's a problem, there's a problem.
