I saw a semi-recent Vulcan something-or-another. It was kind of cool
in a retro chopperesque, stepped king/queen seat kind of way, though I
believe the bike was only 5 or 6 years old. One thing that really
stood out was the fact that they didn't give the bike fake cooling
fins. The engine was as ugly as anything I've seen on a bike. I've got
fake cooling fins on my bike and I've got to say that if manufacturers
didn't outright lie to us and put ugly, smooth engines on every liquid
cooled bike, I'd be riding a much older, air-cooled bike or a Harley/
Victory, which I'd probably be riding anyway if I had the $$ to push
thta way... at least, the Victory.

I know what you mean. Although, when it comes to the Victory, I gotta
say the engine looks very uninteresting, in comparison to the Harley.
Sort of featureless, like an air compressor engine.
But they do have cooling fins! <g>

It's maybe just me but, looks-wise, one of the things I like about the
big twin Harleys is that big primary case, actually. That's a styling
aspect the Sportsters lack.

Ahhh, fins. An American obsession.
Automotive fins as a design element first came to fore when Harley
Earl, head of the Cadillac design team after WWII, decided they were
the epitome of new technology - taking his cue from the F86 Sabre jet
fighter. Cadillac Ranch in Texas documents their evolution.

Personally, I think these fins are much more elegant:
