This ride is tempting. Too tempting.
So if I take the ferry from Prince Rupert into Haines what kind of
road conditions should I expect from Haines to Haines junction?
RGD is that the route you took a few years back?
From there it looks like 1 to A2 to A1 all the way to Anchorage.
And typical weather for the area in early July? I know it is subject
to change but what would be typical.
Decisions.

I don't believe I've ever been down the road between Haines Junction and
Haines, so I don't know much about the road. I'll ask in the Alaska group
I read.
Don't know how accurate this is, but here are temperature/precipitation
curves for Anchorage and Fairbanks. June or July is best. August can be
just fine, or can be soggy. To avoid the risk of frost in the mountains
you could keep between mid June and mid August, but you could stretch that
to the beginning of June to end of August without sweating it too much I
think.

I'll be buying a copy of the Milepost for fun. It's the bible for people
heading to Alaska.

Much like riding the high mountain passes, expect anything all year.

Temptation. Temptation... <g>
Although we'd want to go through Prince Rupert this summer to save
time, when we went 7 years ago we rode right down to Bellingham,
Washington and caught the ferry there, up to Haines, Don.

When we landed in Haines it was cold and raining. After unloading the
bike from the ferry, I got about a mile down the road and, suddenly,
everything shut down! I was definitely a bit worried. Let the bike
sit for a minute, it started and then ran fine for the rest of the
trip. Might have been something to do with sitting in the boat for 3
days - the moist, salt air perhaps.
Then we just about died (okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but not much)
riding from Haines Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon. Raining the
whole way and cold. There were 3 other guys we had met on the Ferry
and had hooked up with. Not quite as well geared as us, they were in
even worse shape.

Finally we got to Haines Junction, got a room and went to this place
for drinks that evening:

That's where I was introduced to the location bar room competition
called "Nails." Came close to being it too.
(you'll find out when you get there ;)
The road from Haines Junction to Tok, Alaska was something like this:

Then, from there to Valdez:

And, finally, Nelson to Edmonton:

Man, that was a long day's ride. ;)

Yeah if only I had unlimited time off and a travel budget to match.
Thanks for the pictures. It was your run and ride report way back when
that got me thinking of that particular route. Even with the crappy
weather it was fairly obvious you two were having a good time.
Steven and Tamara's ride to Alaska, and well everywhere, also stirred
the mix.
Aside from the Moab ride last summer I didn't have a real long one.
This year it is either Jack's place to hang out with the gang or
Alaska, or who knows where.
So that road from Haines to Haines Junction, is it paved? The Road
King will take to gravel better than the Venture, but I still prefer
asphalt.
Thanks again for the pictures. You are the King of enjoyable ride
reports around here.
