Last week I rode my S40 over to the local grocer's for supplies.
(This is almost the only bike-related part of the story).
The grocer has some fruit lined up in boxes along the sidewalk
outside the store.
As I was picking out some cucumbers, a young long-haired bearded
male youth in a cheap cloth jacket with the hood pulled over his head
walked by the boxes of fruit and casually picked up a pear and kept
on walking. His manifest intent (or lack thereof) to pay for this
merchandise established reasonable grounds to suspect _mens rea_
(judicial lingo for "guilty mind").
Nonplussed by this blatantly anti-social behavior I was momentarily
at a loss for words. Then I called to him in a raised voice:
"PUT THAT BACK!"
He turned, looked at me, grinned, laughed and actually complied with
my request. Then he said something which has since slipped my mind,
turned and continued walking away.
Thereupon I went inside. There were about a dozen customers therein
and a lineup of about four.
I verbally informed the checkout clerk of the incident. The clerk
(a comely young lass) smiled and thanked me, whereupon two of
the customers took it upon themselves to respond to me -- and here's
the disturbing part -- BOTH OF THEM TOOK THE PART OF THE THIEF!
"He must be hungry," said one of them in a tone disapproving of my
action. "That makes it ok?" I rejoined, but he only scowled at me
in reply and left the store, leaving a cloud of attitude behind him.
Then I participated in approximately the same conversation with another
querulous customer, after which I climbed aboard my velocipede
and returned home (that was the other bike-related part).

"Your Honor, in the case of _Regina_ vs The Youthful Long-Haired Bearded
Male Suspect, the Crown intents to prove the guilt of the accused
by his actions. In picking up a piece of merchantable goods, ie one
green Anjou pear and then proceeding at a brisk pace outside
the normally respected perimeter of the fruit store, the accused
demonstrated his intention to deprive the fruit vendor of any
monetary compensation."
