I found out recently that Gettsburg host a Bike Week(end) each year.
This year's just passed last weekend I think.

Anyway, this year they had 38 Special as the prime band at a
campground. I've already primed the family for this trip next year and
plan to mix it in with a tour of the battlefield and other scenic
spots.

Has any of you attended this in the past? Or heard about it? Good,
bad, indifferent?

I've been to Shilo, Gettysburg, Bull Run, Bunker Hill, Wendover AFB where
they trained for dropping the A bombs on Japan and Thorppe Abbots, the air
base my father flew out of during WWII.

I find battlefields sacred ground and thus they don't mix well with events
like motorcycle gatherings. I'd rather go alone, walk in the fields and try
to understand the sacrifice of men.

I wouldn't mind visiting a Civil War battleground with other bikers,
assuming we all maintain a respectful attitude.

Actually I think it would be awesome to park my Harley with some other
denizens of Reeky on the Emmitsburg Road near the Angle and look over
the field where 12,000 men charged the Union center.

OTOH a performance of the Gettysburg Address set to rap music probably
wouldn't qualify as respectful... but then again you never know.
For some people, this may be the only way the message would reach them.

For example, this is from Lord Buckley's "hip" version. No matter
how it is paraphrased or satirized the greatness of this speech
is still there:

Four big hits and seven licks ago,
our before-daddies swung forth upon this sweet groovey land
a jumpin', wailin', stompin', swingin' new nation,
hip to the cool sweet groove of liberty
and solid sent upon the Ace lick dat all cats and kiddies,
red, white, or blue, is created level in front.

We are now hung with a king size main-day Civil Drag,
soundin' whether this nation or any up there nation,
so hip and so solid sent can stay with it all the way...

There was a group here in SE VA who organized rides to civl war
battlefields. That was their thing. Some were re-enactors and they
loved the history of the Commonwealth. I don't know if they still do
that or not and AFAIK, they only did it for sites in VA, making it a
full day of riding and history.

Not me, man! I'm planning on doing donuts on those battlefields and
burnouts in the parking lots not to mention drinking, carousing, and
running naked across the fields!

Seriously speaking, I agree with you. I ride my bike to local rev war
battlefields and park my bike, get off and walk in the woods where
Americans and British were camped. I read the memorial plaques and
ruminate on what it may have felt like back then - all to give honor
and pause to soldiers on both sides.

I was planning on the bike week as a reason for a long ride and then
Gettysburg for the historical view of things since we'll also likely
take the car.
